La Settimana della Lingua ha due linee tematiche principali: la sostenibilità legata ad un grande intellettuale del XX secolo, Italo Calvino (scrittore ambientalista ante litteram) e la democrazia attraverso il contributo offerto dal celebre professore di Harvard Gaetano Salvemini (storico intellettuale impegnato nella lotta per la democrazia).

Entrambi sono accomunati dal fatto di aver insegnato nelle più prestigiose università della nostra circoscrizione e per ciascuno di loro si celebra quest’anno una speciale ricorrenza: il 100° anniversario della nascita di Calvino e 150° della nascita di Salvemini.

Tra gli eventi presentati segnaliamo il concorso diretto agli studenti di scuole e università del New England, “Italiano: lezioni di sostenibilità” il cui lancio online si terrà lunedì 16 ottobre. Gli insegnanti e le loro classi potranno iscriversi alle due sessioni online previste.

A seguire, mercoledì 18 ottobre, si svolgerà in presenza al Center for European Studies una edizione speciale del Salvemini Colloquium, nella quale si parlerà di Salvemini e della sua eredità intellettuale. La partecipazione è aperta a tutti registrandosi al seguente link: http://tiny.cc/3h5cvz.

Infine la giornata di sabato 21 ottobre ci vedrà impegnati in un incontro in presenza con il professor Malaguti e il giornalista Ken Shulman su Palomar di Italo Calvino presso I AM Books di Boston, per celebrare il grande scrittore del Novecento attraverso il libro in cui si condensano alcune delle principali tematiche del suo pensiero.

The Italian Language Week has two main thematic strands: sustainability linked to a great intellectualot the 20th century, Italo Calvino (ante litteram environmentalist writer) and democracy through the contribution made by renowned Harvard former professor Gaetano Salvemini (an intellectual historian committed to the struggle for democracy). 

Both are united by the fact that they have taught at the most prestigious universities in our constituency, and for each of them a special anniversary is being celebrated this year: the 100th anniversary of Calvino's birth and the 150th anniversary of Salvemini's birth.

Among the events presented we highlight the competition directed to students from New England colleges and universities, "Italian: lessons in sustainability," whose online launch will be held on Monday, October 16. Teachers and their classes will be able to register for the two scheduled online sessions. 

Following this, a special edition of the Salvemini Colloquium, in which Salvemini and his intellectual legacy will be discussed, will be held in presence at the Center for European Studies on Wednesday, October 18. Finally, the day of Saturday, October 21, will see us engaged in an in-person meeting with Professor Malaguti and journalist Ken Shulman on Italo Calvino's Palomar at I AM Books in Boston, celebrating the great twentieth-century writer through the book in which some of the main themes of his thought are condensed.

Workshop 9 - Mediation and Linguistic Diversity in the Language Classroom

Presenter: Gina Maiellaro

The concept of “mediation” has gained importance in intercultural language pedagogy, as vident from its inclusion in the revised descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the ACTFL Intercultural Communication benchmarks. However, the meaning, role, and application of mediation in language pedagogy are not always clear. In mediation, the learner creates bridges with other people and helps to construct meaning, sometimes within the same language, sometimes across languages and modalities (cross-linguistic mediation). When students become intercultural mediators, they are involved inprocesses of recognizing, understanding, explaining, commenting, interpreting, and negotiating phenomena. Mediation also implies that what the language means more broadly depends on the context in which it is used. This workshop will revisit the concept of ‘mediation’ as it applies to intercultural language education. It will illustrate ways different approaches to mediation can be operationalized in the language classroom. A focus will be placed on mediation techniques, strategies, and tasks associated with the theme of linguistic diversity in Italy, focusing on stereotyping based on language (accent, race, or name), how this can restrict social participation and linguistic privilege (linguistic minorities, dialects), and how linguistic diversity contributes to social justice. 

Gina Maiellaro is a teaching professor, Italian Program Coordinator and Curriculum Committee chair at Northeastern University’s World Languages Center. Her primary teaching and research areas are Italian language pedagogy, linguistics, and cultural studies. Gina’s academic research explores second language acquisition with a special focus on curriculum development, testing, intercultural/transcultural competence (with a focus on ethnography, semiotics, and translation) in language education. She is the chair of the National Italian Exam, a well-established proficiency-based exam for high school students promoted by the American Association of Teachers of Italian. She frequently presents at national and international conferences and actively participates in national and local associations dedicated to advancing Italian language and culture education in the United States. Currently, she serves on the board of directors of the Massachusetts Italian Teachers

Keynote Speaker - Fred Kudjo Kuwornu:

Prepare to be captivated by our distinguished keynote speaker for this year, Mr. Fred Kudjo Kuwornu. 

Fred Kudjo Kuwornu is an Italian-Ghanaian multi-hyphenate filmmaker, activist, educator, and producer, born and raised in Italy and based in New York, where he founded his company production Do The Right Films. He is best known as the director of critically acclaimed documentaries such as Blaxploitalian, Inside Buffalo, and 18 IUS SOLI. 

His documentaries deal with political and social themes, such as racism, interracial relations, diversity, Afro-Italian and Black diasporic identity in Italy, and the African diaspora in the world. Fred Kuwornu holds a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Bologna, Italy, focusing on sociology and mass communication studies. In July 2021, He launched the platform BlackItalia.info and "Teaching Black Itay," an online course that explores the contemporary presence of the African diaspora in Italy. He has taught classes and labs at Colorado College, the University of Minneapolis, and Middlebury College Italian Summer School and lectured in more than 200 Colleges in North America. His production has been awarded and granted by the New York Foundation for the Arts, Open Society, and Cineteca of Bologna. He is currently developing "We Were There," a documentary about the African presence during the Renaissance in Europe. 

His invaluable insights and experiences are poised to both inspire and enlighten each and every one of us.

Emma Maganzini e Jenna Vincenzino, le due studentesse vincitrici della borsa di studio Eduitalia 2023, saranno premiate durante la cerimonia che si terrà il 23 ottobre 2023 al Consolato Generale di Boston, in collegamento con l'Ambasciata d'Italia a Washington.

Il premio consiste in un viaggio studio di due settimane in Italia presso l'Università per stranieri di Siena.

Complimenti alle ragazze che hanno scelto di studiare l'italiano e alle loro insegnanti, Vilma Bibeau e Silvia Dupont per il fantastico lavoro svolto.
