Accelerating Social, Academic and Health Equity
Monthly Report to the Community
May 2022
Dear JFS Friends, Supporters, and Collaborative Partners,

We at JFS stand against hate and violence in our neighborhoods and communities, and are deeply saddened by the recent attacks in Buffalo, NY and Uvalde, TX. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families that have lost loved ones. Below in the enewletter you will note actionable things you can do including taking an active bystander class. We must act!

As we approach the long Memorial Day weekend, I am pleased to share the above photo. Last week I was so excited after a 3-year hiatus due to COVID to once again assist with the organizing of the Brothers for Life (brothersforlife.com) event at Gillette Stadium. This event brings wounded warriors from Israel to visit our community. One of those events hosted by the Kraft Family makes it possible for wounded warriors both from Israel and the U.S. to meet and share. There is a unique bond amongst wounded warriors around the world so it was a special event to experience.

In my Memorial Day message, I recall friends and fellow sailors who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our way of life. As you prepare for a weekend filled with outdoor activities, barbeques, and being with friends and family, I hope that you will take some time to remember those who have been lost fighting or preparing to fight our country’s wars.

Especially in my thoughts are all the gold star families (americasgoldstarfamilies.org) that this weekend will be remembering a family member.

Honoring our own also reminds us of others who are paying the ultimate sacrifice for their freedom. We stand united with the people of Ukraine as they struggle against tyranny and here at JFS, our work to support incoming individuals and families is expanding. Donations are needed to ensure we have the resources to meet the needs of these victims of war, and we continue to seek housing for new arrivals. Click here to learn how you can support these efforts and get involved and follow JFS on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram to receive updates as they occur.

May the memory of all the service men and women that have been lost, as well as all of those who have been lost to hate and violence, be a blessing,
Lino Covarrubias, Veteran and CEO

Afghan Evacuee Resettlement Project

Since October, JFS has welcomed 13 Afghan evacuee families (47 individuals) to the Greater Boston Metrowest Area. Our partners at area faith organizations have been essential in supporting these families as they build a new life in the United States. We are especially thankful for the teams of volunteer coordinators at each faith organization who have recruited, onboarded, and supervised large teams of volunteers.

MEET THE STAFF
Malka Young, LICSW, CCM
Director, Allies in Aging — JFS Elder Care Management
With JFS since May 2000
Speaks English and Hebrew
As Director of the Allies in Aging JFS Elder Care Solutions program, Malka oversees the team of Geriatric Care Managers who provide a full range of life care management services for older adults and their families.

Malka received her Master’s degree in Social Work from Boston University and graduated from Brandeis University. She is a frequent presenter at local and national conferences. Malka addresses the challenges of aging in community, living well with chronic illness, caring for aging parents, grief and bereavement. She is a published author and was the first social worker in the pioneering Geriatric Evaluation Unit at the VA Medical Center in Jamaica Plan.

“Allies in Aging fulfills JFS’ mission to alleviate suffering, enhance lives and support frail older adults and their caregivers. Families in distress call JFS looking for help, their mother or father is about to be discharged from the hospital, their husband or wife has a new diagnosis of dementia or Parkinson’s or congestive heart failure and they are totally overwhelmed. Googling for help has brought confusion and frustration, nothing being quite right, not knowing what to choose. Whether it is arranging a video conference, bringing siblings together from across the country to discuss what to do with mom or dad, or a JFS care manager advocating for their loved one, using their many years of experience and close community connections to so they can receive the care they need, JFS care managers are here to help. As the Director of Allies in Aging, I get the daily satisfaction of bringing relief to families and elders under stress. Working together, using the unique talents of each member of its multi-disciplinary team, families and individuals benefit from years of expertise to support them in reaching their goals–whether it is aging in place in their own home, choosing an assisted living community that meets their needs that they can afford, learning to live with a new diagnosis, or finding the support they need to be the best caregiver they can be while taking care of themselves.”
