Shalom Uvracha,
 
This week's parasha opens with the phrase adam ki yakriv mikem korban l'Hashem, which translates as ‘a man from among you will bring close a sacrifice to Hashem.’

The name of this week's Torah portion Vayikra is related to a word in the phrase -- yakriv. Yakriv signifies that the person bringing an offering comes closer to Hashem through this sacrifice. The deep message of this verse is that when we want to come close to Hashem, we must accept the yoke of Torah just as the ox accepts the yoke of its master. We must not be ashamed of those who may laugh at our practices.

King David states: “But I was brutish and I did not know; I was [as] a beast with You. Yet I was constantly with You; You grasped my right hand”. In these verses, when King David nullifies himself like an animal before Hashem, his loss of ego brings him closer to Hashem than he was previously.
 
Similarly, when we are humble and nullify our egos, we become closer to Hashem than we were before.

In these days, we no longer have the Temple nor its offerings to atone for our sins. So, the removal of attachment to selfish desires and to our ego becomes especially relevant for us.

Hashem appreciates our humility before Him, in a way similar to the sacrifices. In our times, we serve Hashem through charity, prayer and Torah learning. These are the three main conduits of Teshuva, ways of turning towards Hashem and returning to Hashem, for us.
