Stein Family Commits $5 Million to Integrated Science Center Project at Hobart and William Smith!
A generous gift from Kevin Stein ’88 and his family provides the financial foundation for a state-of-the-art building that will be the hub of scientific education at Hobart and William Smith.

For Kevin Stein ’88, studying science and math is like “learning a language” — one that’s “practical, pragmatic and teaches wonderful problem-solving skills.”

To expose more students “to a topnotch science education in a liberal arts environment” and encourage “well-rounded practitioners of this wonderful language,” Stein and his family have committed a leadership gift of $5 million that will anchor the development of a new science facility at Hobart and William Smith.

“Our faculty and students will benefit tremendously from the new science center and the Stein family’s support for the life-changing teaching, mentorship and research opportunities that take place at the Colleges,” says Hobart and William Smith President Mark D. Gearan. “In his professional success and his commitment to HWS, Kevin exemplifies the power of the liberal arts and sciences — from research and mentorship on campus, to a prestigious graduate program and career, to supporting our community and helping generations of students. We are thrilled to embark on this exciting project as this gift ignites our plans moving forward.”

Happy Holidays from Casella Waste!
During the 2022 holiday season, the team at Casella Waste participated in a few different donation drives taking place in the region. The whole building got involved, and it was so fun for everyone to see what new items appeared under the Christmas tree.
The organizations that received donations included:

Habitat for Humanity – With offices and volunteers located throughout the country, Habitat for Humanity strives to provide families with affordable housing and in turn, build long-term financial security and better communities. The Casella team adopted a family located in Waterloo, NY for the holidays and purchased toys for the three children living in the home. The family had been having their new house built over the past several months and were finally able to move in for Christmas. The family was excited to be able to spend their first Christmas in their new home and for Casella’s generosity in making it so memorable.

The SPCA of Auburn, NY – Located just outside of Auburn, NY, the mission of the SPCA is to “alleviate the suffering, promote the comforts, improve the conditions of animals and prevent cruelty to animals.” They are able to fulfill this mission through monetary donations as well as gifts-in-kind. The Casella team shopped from the Animal’s Wish List and donated items such as food, blankets, cleaning supplies, and toys. The team at the SPCA were surprised and very appreciative that the employees at Casella Waste thought of them during the holiday season.
E. John Gavras Center – Located in Auburn NY, the Gavras Center focuses on education for pre-school aged children. Their inclusive classrooms include children with identified special needs and “typical” developing children. With over 66 years of experience working with children, the team at the Gavras Center works to ensure that the children they serve receive innovative programming through hands on play, literacy, and other engaging activities. For the second year in a row, the team at Casella Waste participated in their Christmas Elf program. This program provides toys and books for not only the children that attend the Gavras center, but also for all children in the participant’s homes. The team at the Gavras Center were extremely grateful for the continued generosity of Casella Waste. Pictured: Casella staff with Josephine Emilio (elf), Christmas Elf program director.
