December/Kislev 2023

Hanukkah begins Thursday night!

During this challenging time, we strive to bring light to the darkness. Bring light with your passion for community, your pride in our sacred tradition, and your presence throughout our week of celebration.

We’ll kick things off with a big community celebration on the December 7. We’re specifically inviting friends and allies on the first night. Let them know it’s a great way to show support! Our new, year-round choir, NaShira, will sing.

December 8 is bring your own menorah night! I really am hoping for at least 54 menorahs to light our brief, intergenerational Shabbat evening service!

Every night of Hanukkah is an opportunity to connect. Different groups at Temple Emanuel will light the massive menorah in Menorah Valley, followed by the nightly drawing of our Hanukkah raffle. There will be hot cider, hot chocolate, donuts, dreidel and more.

You’ll be able to join us in person or online each night. It might not be the most important holiday, but as we continue to live with great uncertainty, it’s an important time to come together. I’ll look forward to seeing you throughout the week!

Sixth Night for Tzedakah

On the sixth night of Hanukkah, we will gather our temple family to celebrate Hanukkah and revive the URJ tradition of Ner Shel Tzedakah.

Ner Shel Tzedakah ("Candle of Righteousness") is a project in which families and individuals devote the sixth night of Hanukkah to giving rather than receiving. It is suggested to donate the value of the gifts (or the gifts themselves) that otherwise would be exchanged on that night to organizations that assist those in need, locally or globally.  By making donations on the sixth night of Hanukkah, families help the Jewish candle of righteousness glow brightly for those in need. Don’t let the light go out!

Read more about this tradition.

Please consider making donations or bringing items to support our local projects:

  • Infant Clothing Collection for Ronald McDonald House,
  • Children & Men's Clothing for The Shalom Project
  • Paper Towels & Toilet Paper for the Moore School Food Pantry
  • Bottled Water & Rain Ponchos for City with Dwellings
