Important Announcements
Scholarship Program: A Big Success
As the responses to the call for scholarship applications were significantly more than expected, coupled with a sincere need for the program, the CBDCE Board of Directors chose to award more than the originally planned number of scholarships in its first year. For 2021, 86 scholarships covering the costs of taking the CDCES practice and certification examinations, (value of over $400 for recipients) were awarded. Next year's program will open in first quarter of 2022. Be sure to pass it along to your peers!
ADCES & CBDCE Fellowship Award
The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists Foundation and the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education are proud to award Kelsey Howard, Ph.D., a one-year fellowship in integrated diabetes management. Howard will develop and pilot test an intervention to help adolescents and parents address concerns about Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) use. Congratulations to Kelsey!
CBDCE 35th Anniversary
35 years of Diabetes Care & Education
CBDCE is celebrating 35 years of diabetes care and education in 2021. As the certification board reflects on the accomplishments of the past 35 years, the organization’s leadership and staff stay focused on the future. Read the full article below (and be sure to watch the videos) on how the CDCES credential has evolved in the past 35 years.
CDCES Certificant Spotlight
Meet Elba Lopez MEd, RDN, CDCES, BC-ADM
Recently during the pandemic, I had some months without income because of the limitations related to COVID-19. The CDCES opened the door for me to work remotely where I can help people with diabetes improve their knowledge in DSME and achieve their health goals.

Each newsletter we spotlight a CDCES to acknowledge the work they do. If you are interested in being featured in a future CDCES story, contact Susan Hall.
Q & A Corner
Q: Is it possible to have my credential extended if I do not renew it prior to expiration?
A: If your credential is not renewed prior to expiration, it will expire December 31. Extensions of certification are not granted. Any individual whose credential expires must pass the Certification Exam for Diabetes Care and Education Specialists to regain the credential (as well as document either meeting the renewal practice requirement or minimum acceptable continuing education hours).
