LA County Academic Decathlon winners honored

LACOE held its 40th annual Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon banquet last week at the Quiet Cannon Conference Center in Montebello to honor the 53 decathlon teams and more than 300 students who participated in the prestigious countywide competition. The event promotes academic enrichment, self assurance and teamwork.

The winners also received scholarships from the California Credit Union. The Mark Keppel HS team was honored as the three-peat champion. "The qualities that you have developed during this competition, such as patience, perseverance and determination, will stay with you for many years to come," LACOE Superintendent Dr. Debra Duardo said in her remarks.

All In Spotlight: Mark Trulson, Alhambra HS

Band students make music together safely

LACOE spotlights Director of Instrumental Music Mark Trulson and his band students at Alhambra HS in Alhambra USD. Just before the mask mandate in schools was lifted, Mark talked about the past two years of teaching band during the COVID-19 pandemic. When schools closed, his students switched to online Zoom classes which proved difficult for making music. In fall 2021, they finally returned to in-person learning. Band students have been wearing special band masks and using bell covers on their wind instruments to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Following these safety protocols allowed the students to reunite and make music together.

Celebrating AANHPI Heritage Month

May is Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) Heritage Month. We celebrate the history and achievements of AANHPIs and their leadership, resilience and courage during this unprecedented time.

In a resolution, the LA County Board of Education has called on communities to observe the month and learn about AANHPI history and cultures. The Board also encouraged support for efforts to combat hate toward AANHPIs by providing instructional resources and promising practices to make a significant impact on the lives of AANHPI students.

Are you up to date with your COVID-19 vaccine?

Receiving your initial vaccine series gives you more freedom to work, visit certain venues and, in some cases, travel with fewer restrictions. But getting up to date with all recommended COVID-19 vaccine doses, including a booster dose (when eligible), provides the best protection against COVID-19 and variants like Omicron and Delta.
