Derek Arden's - Monday Morning Briefing

The Win Win Negotiator

Greetings!

Welcome to this week’s briefing – and thank you for opening it.

I’ve always believed in the saying: “Age is an attitude, not a number.”

Watching Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood light up Glastonbury only reinforced that view. Rod at 80 and Ronnie a mere 78.

It reminded me that we should keep doing what we’re passionate about—for as long as we can—and aim to make a real difference to others. Have a great week.

In this edition:

  1. Body Language – The silent deal-maker
  2. The Full Negotiation Quiz – Test yourself (and your team)
  3. Dylan Tweney Interview – Insights from Silicon Valley
  4. Justin Urquhart-Stewart – This month’s market commentary (in case you missed it)
  5. Latest Podcasts – Links to the three most recent episodes
  6. Go With the Flow – When stepping back is the smartest move

NEGOTIATION TECHNIQUE OF THE WEEK

Body Language – The Silent Deal Maker

Reading body language isn’t just important in negotiation – it’s vital. Equally crucial is managing your own non-verbal signals.

Some people are naturally intuitive, but many miss critical tells.

Recently, I was in a lawyer's office negotiating an insurance claim. The lawyer representing the insurer stated firmly, “We can’t go any higher than that.”

But while his words said one thing, his body language told another story entirely – as I pointed out to my client during a well-timed strategic break.

We pressed on and secured an additional £41,000.

Steven Bartlett recently asked former FBI body language expert Joe Navarro, “How important is body language?”

Navarro’s reply: “Reading body language is supremely important.”

I couldn’t agree more.

If you're heading into a critical negotiation and want expert support – you know where to find me.

And if you're going to take a chance and go solo, make sure you’re fully equipped.

Here is a copy of my Body Language Tips booklet – a proven edge for when the stakes are high.

The full Negotiation Quiz is here to help you sharpen your skills. We all negotiate—every day—but it’s one of the most underestimated and overlooked abilities in business and life.

If you’ve taken the earlier quiz before, the new questions begin at number 16. Otherwise, the full version is attached for you—and your team—to enjoy. A little fun, with a serious purpose.

Answers are supplied but don't cheat.

16 - What is the best way to handle a difficult or aggressive negotiator?

A) Mirror their aggression

B) Stay calm and use strategic questioning

C) Walk away immediately

D) Give in to their demands to avoid conflict.

Thought for the Week

GO WITH THE FLOW

Sometimes we feel so strongly about an issue that we want to take on the world. But fighting uphill battles can lead to unnecessary stress and personal anguish.

When that feeling strikes, take a strategic time out. Step back and ask yourself: Is it really worth swimming against the tide?

Jes Staley, the former Barclays CEO, maybe reflecting on that very question this week.

💡Negotiation training delivers one of the fastest and highest returns on investment available.

It’s not about playing mind games or mastering complex psychology.

It’s about having the confidence and skill to get paid what you’re worth.
