Speak out on Education Bills Today!
The Missouri House Elementary and Secondary Education Committee will hold a hearing Tuesday, February 1 on two bills of concern:

  • HR 1750, by Rep. Chuck Basye, takes aim at our school boards. This bill would allow registered voters of a school district to file a petition with the district's school board asking that an item be placed on a board meeting agenda. While this bill is not on the public hearing calendar, you can contact Committee Chairman Basye and share your concerns about this bill at 573-751-1501 or email Chuck.Basye@house.mo.gov Read the summary of HR 1750 here, or the full text of HR 1750 here.
The Missouri Senate Education Committee will also meet on Tuesday, February 1, when they will hear SB 869. This bill would divert public money to private schools. Tell the Senate Education Committee to oppose SB 869 and any legislation that seeks to move public money through any entity besides the locally elected school board that is there to represent the community.
Call to Action against Racist Legislation
In the Missouri legislature, two bills--House Bill (HB) 1995 and HB 1474--were heard in the House Committee on Elementary and Secondary Education on January 11. A record number of Missourians submitted testimony online, overwhelmingly opposing these bills.

HB 1995 would force school districts to notify parents whenever a teacher intends to teach a topic that parents consider “divisive or controversial.” Imagine the snarl of litigation that could follow the enactment of such a law. How would teachers find time to teach?

HB 1474 prohibits school districts, charter schools, and their personnel from teaching, using, or providing "critical race theory" curriculum or from teaching, affirming, or promoting any of the claims, views, or opinions found in the 1619 Project.

Act now. It is essential that we stop this dangerous legislation. A vote on a House Committee Substitute could come as early as February 1. Send your message to the House Committee on Elementary and Secondary Education here. Personalize the message by editing it into your own words (including the subject line) to make it more effective.
St. Louis City Board of Aldermen Act to Overturn the Vote of the People
The Board of Aldermen recently introduced two bills to repeal Proposition D for Democracy, the monumental legislation that passed with over 68% of the vote in 2020. Prop D provides for approval voting in which voters can choose as many candidates as they wish across political party affiliation. Without Prop D, in heavily Democratic St. Louis, officials could be elected in the regular election even though they won less than even 33% of the vote in the primary election (which in fact was the “real” election). Those who were thus elected took office without a strong mandate to govern, making it more difficult for them to exert real leadership. Women’s Voices Raised for Social Justice supported Prop D because it allows for a runoff in the regular election of the candidates with the greatest support of the voters, rather than pitting a Democrat with lukewarm support against a Republican with even less support.

We cannot let the board overturn the will of the people and silence our voices. We cannot let them take our city backwards. Board Bills 159 and 160 take a page from the playbook of the Missouri State Legislature, which repeatedly tries to overturn the will of Missouri voters. The legislature has thwarted the people’s will regarding Medicaid expansion, Right to Work, regulation of puppy mills and CAFO’s, raising the minimum wage in St. Louis and Kansas City, conceal and carry laws, and more. Help us assure this doesn’t happen in St. Louis. Sign the petition and take action TODAY to tell the Board of Aldermen to respect the people’s voice and vote NO on Board Bills 159 and 160. Tell the Board of Aldermen and Mayor Jones to support Prop D and protect the will of the people today.
