Hello Friend!
Is January too early to start thinking about our spring gardens? Lori Holt certainly doesn't think so! She's getting ready to plant her Calico Sew Along Garden and has released a beautiful new fabric collection. This splash of colour should provide some welcome inspiration as we continue through the dull grey days of winter. I actually saw blue sky and sunshine one afternoon this week and I almost didn't know what to think. If you're like me, desperate for colour, then sit back and just enjoy the colours and patterns that this email has to bring. Even if you're not a Lori Holt follower, just allow the colours to be the seeds and watch them grow!
New Arrival! Calico by Lori Holt
Calico, the new collection from Lori Holt and Riley Blake Fabrics is a follow up to Lori's wildly popular Calico Days designer collection. Using the vintage style we all love, Lori's designed several new prints and included some of her favourites from the 2015 collection.
Calico is a 46-pieces collection that include plaids, florals and texture in an array of different colours. There's also a Grandma's Garden cheater print that sets the garden theme.

Bundles... Lots and Lots of Bundles Options!

Seeing as this is such a big collection, we have many different ways for you to bring it home to your sewing room!
Complete Collection!

You can choose to bring home the complete collection in 46-piece fat quarter or fat eighth bundles. With layer cakes, jelly rolls and charm packs, you will receive 42-pieces.

Note - The Grandma's Garden cheater print is NOT included in any of these bundles.
Half the Collection!
If you don't have room in your fabric bins for the entire Calico collection, we've broken it down into two different 24-piece fat quarter bundles. Either of these bundles will get you well on your way to your next Lori Holt project!

Note - Assortment #1 is also available as fat eighth bundle. Both assortments INCLUDE the Grandma's Garden print.
Colourway Bundles Available!

If you already have a well-rounded Lori Holt stash, you might want to bring home just a few pieces from the Calico collection to fill in some gaps. To make the task of choosing a bit easier, we've separated the collection into 6 different colour options.
The available colour options include:
  • 4-piece half-metre background bundle

  • 8-piece Red/Coral and Plum/Raisin fat quarter bundles

  • 7-piece Denim/Songbird, Autumn/Daisy and Green/Basil fat quarter bundles

The Calico collection is available in-store and online now!
Calico Garden Sew Along
The Calico Garden kits are SOLD OUT but that doesn't mean that you can't participate in the Sew Along. You might have to get a bit more creative with your fabric choices, but by picking up a Calico 46-piece fat quarter bundle you will have a good selection of fabrics to start with! We suggest heading over to the Bee Prepared instructions on Lori's Blog for a complete listing of what you will need.
To make it easier to shop for your Calico Garden supplies, including many of the notions that Lori will use along the way, we've organized them all in one place on the website. These notions are also available in-store as well.
Inspiration In the Form of a Challenge!

You don't have to participate in the Calico Garden Sew Along to get enjoyment out of the Calico collection. In fact, we think Calico is much too pretty to limit to one quilt and it might also be too pretty to limit to just one designer!

Riley Blake Designs Block Challenge 2023

Have you heard about this year’s Riley Blake Designs (RBD) Block Challenge? They’re just getting started over at RBD and it’s not too late to join. Visit the Riley Blake website, blog and YouTube channel the first 3 Tuesdays of each month through May 23rd. With free block patterns from designers including Beverly McCullough of Flamingo Toes, Sandy Gervais, Amy Smart and Sue Daley, how can you go wrong?
Join Lori Too!

Lori Holt is participating in the Block Challenge action as well. She is sewing along using fabrics from her Calico collection for all 16 blocks from the challenge. She also has a few design plans of her own. On February 21st, Lori will post the block she has designed as part of the challenge. She will also share her plans to turn her blocks into a bed-runner. She will posting a tutorial on her YouTube channel and sharing a FREE PDF with the setting pattern for the bed-runner. Pop over to Lori's Instagram page where she posts her block every Tuesday.

You can learn more about the Riley Blake Block Challenge, including the fabric requirements and the patterns for the initial three blocks, on the Riley Blake website. Next week is the 'catch-up' week for the month of January, so now is the perfect time to join!
Work Your Stash for the RBD Block Challenge!
You don't have to buy a bunch of new fabrics for the Block Challenge. Tami was eager to sign up for another RBD challenge and this year she decided to use her Lori Holt stash. Rather than choose a rainbow of colours for her challenge quilt, she's using a more controlled approach with her colour selection.

What approach will you take?

Will you choose splashes of colour or a more controlled look? Will you stick with fabrics from just one designer or take an assortment of fabrics from your stash?

Whatever you choose, be sure to have fun! And if life gets in the way and you miss a week here and there, just get right back on track as soon as you're able. There are 'catch-up' weeks built into each month, to help encourage you to stay on track.
A Little Inspiration from Kim Diehl!

In the spirit of taking inspiration for Calico from more than one designer, while I was working on the Scraps of Kindness email last week, I fell in love with the Chocolate Covered Cherries Patchwork lap quilt. While the kit isn't new, the pattern called to me last week and I had what I thought might be a crazy idea...

What if... we take a Kim Diehl pattern and use Lori Holt fabrics instead? We always encourage you to think out of the box and imagine your fabric stash made up in a pattern that catches you eye. So, here's my attempt...
I somewhat sheepishly suggested a Calico version of the Chocolate Covered Cherries Patchwork lap quilt to both Tammy and Tami. I expected them to veto the idea right away. Instead I started to get hate messages from Tammy because my random suggestion sent her home with inspiration to immediately dive into her Lori Holt stash and start planning, cutting and sewing. I say "inspiration" but it might have become an obsession because once the idea was planted, she just couldn't stop!

The result?
While Tammy used her own Lori Holt stash, her blocks looked so great that we just had to come up with a Calico Patchwork lap kit, for anyone who might not have a large enough stash to work with.

Kits Available!

There are kits available for both the original Chocolate Covered Cherries Patchwork lap quilt, featuring the Chocolate Covered Cherries collection by Kim Diehl and the new Calico version as well. These kits include all fabric for the quilt top, including the binding.

Finished Size: 60" x 60"
Free Pattern Available!

The Chocolate Covered Cherries lap quilt is a FREE pattern by Kim Diehl that can be downloaded from the Henry Glass website. Hopefully this idea has inspired you to explore your own stash of fabrics or perhaps to explore some Kim Diehl patterns that you might already have and reimagine them in other fabrics. Now that we know Kim's patterns work well with Lori's fabrics, what other combinations can you come up with?
A Quilters Cupboard Favourite!
If you're a loyal email follower, you will already know how much we love the Tri-Star table runner. From Kansas Troubles to Kim Diehl, from Yukata in blue to Yukata in brown, it's almost impossible to find a fabric combination that this pattern doesn't work for.
It was time to come up with a new Lori Holt version of the Tri-Star runner. This time we pulled together a few different colour colours from the collection. Won't these colours be perfect as spring approaches?

As Seen on YouTube! If you're new to the Tri-Star runner, you will find a tutorial that will walk your through all the steps for making this wonderful table runner.

Finished Size: 15" x 32"

There are many options of the Tri-Star table runner available in-store and on the website.
