"Words from the Wise: Gamaliel"

So in the present case, I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, because if this plan or this undertaking is of human origin, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them—in that case you may even be found fighting against God!” (Gamaliel, Acts 5:38-39)
Come to Worship on Sunday to learn about a little-known, but very powerful Jewish leader, Gamaliel, whose wise words to his fellow Sanhedrin saved Peter and the disciples’ lives so that they could continue building the early church. St. Paul was a student of Gamaliel’s too, and because of Gamaliel’s great reputation and other Jewish leaders took their lead from him, the early disciples were able to carry out Christ’s mission on earth.

Vacation Bible School
The Christian Education Committee is thrilled to announce that Vacation Bible School will be an in-house-directed program this summer! (Krislund had to cancel due to lack of available staffing). Plans are already in place for an inspirational and fun week here at Silver Spring Presbyterian Church!
The dates are August 15-19, 2022, from 9 am – 12 noon. The theme, Celebrating God’s World, will include earth-care education, creative drama, crafts, recreation, songs, snacks and a special pageant at the end of the week. Registration will open up July 6, 2022 and will be accessible online and through paper registration forms in the Gathering Place. Registration is open to children age Pre-K 4 through Fourth grade (school grade in fall of 2022). We are limiting the number of spaces to 50 children.
Items needed right now are paper towel and toilet paper rolls (sans the paper!). There will be a box in the Gathering Place starting July 6th
Volunteers are needed in the following areas: set-design, set-up and break-down, crafts, recreation, snack preparation and service, floaters, and group leaders. There will be a sign-up sheet for volunteers and shifts in the Gathering Place, beginning June 22nd . You may participate as much as you’d like, or just pick a couple of shifts. If you are working directly with youth, you will need to have an updated clearance. Pastor Lisa and Heather McCarthy are working on those. For more information, please contact Pastor Lisa at 717.766.0204, ext. 3104 and you – it will be a blast!

Christian Education this Sunday
Adult Bible Study continues each week at 10:05 am in Room 201. This week we study the scripture of 1 Kings. Nursery is provided all morning, downstairs in the preschool level.

The Story of David! Join us July 14th.
The CE Program is offering a bus trip to see The Story of David, at Sight and Sound. This trip will serve as a fund raiser for SSPC CE to be used for our youth for events, mission trips and VBS. The date is July 14th, starting at 11 am, with a trip to Sight and Sound to see the show, lunch at Millers Buffet outside of Lancaster, returning to the church by no later than 6 pm. The total price of the ticket is $155 per person and includes the price of the ticket, lunch, bus trip, all gratuities and tips; it is all exclusive. For each ticket sold, $20 will be donated to CE Programs. Any questions, contact Scott Pepperman. 717-389-5100. Look for a sign-up sheet in the Gathering Place.

Get Ready for the Fall Faire! Saturday, October 8, 2022
The tradition continues at SSPC as we prepare for the annual Fall Faire on October 8th! Plans are underway for a full, in-person event full of White Elephant finds and books, Christmas Shop and crafts, baked goods, pies, soups, lunch and a celebration of our heritage and the autumn season. There will also be child-friendly activities, games, a hayride and fun fall festivities for the whole family!

Right now is the time to start thinking about how you can become involved. The event relies on volunteers, so set aside a few hours on October 8, or the prior week, to help out.

You can start saving items for donation to the White Elephant, which will be collected in September. In addition, we have a year-round opportunity to sell your donated items on eBay! This method has proved to be very successful over the past few years as Tony Kren volunteers his time to process and sell items and donate the proceeds to the Fall Faire. Items that are desirable for online sales are:

  • Old toys and collectibles, especially those that are new or like new. Having the original box adds value. Ex: Star Wars, Masters of the Universe, etc.
  • Old military, writing pens, tobacco advertising, autographs, collections. Anything from the pre 1950’s can be surprisingly in demand.
  • Antiques. Old Jewelry.
  • Unique items. New, unused items in boxes.
  • Any items listed will be shipped so size and weight should be manageable.

To donate to our eBay sales effort, any time of year, contact Tony Kren to make those arrangements.

We are grateful for Claudia Brown who has chaired the Fall Faire over the past 10 years, keeping it going through the particularly challenging pandemic years. She and her committee have done a fantastic job resulting in ever-increasing funds that go directly to Mission opportunities in our community. A committee of 5 has stepped in to cover the work of Claudia’s ONE person responsibilities! Please contact any of them to volunteer, donate, give new ideas or ask questions to help make this year’s Fall Faire a success!

Earth Care - Tip #2 How to save on electricity
Your home office equipment and entertainment center may draw a trickle of electricity when these gadgets are in standby mode, even if they are not in use. Put these items on a power strip and turn off the strip when not in use.

Silver Spring Road and Woods Drive traffic signal timeline
June 13th - For approximately 4 weeks; utility pole relocation will be taking place; expect lane restrictions during this time period.
Tentative full road closure - July 15th – July 17th (rain date July 22nd – July 24th)
Expected completion is November 2022.
This is a reminder that the ROAR Team will be returning to Farmington, Maine this summer. MATE stands for Mission At The Eastward and has been helping people in need for over 60 years. SSPC has been participating in this rural ministry in central western Maine for over 25 years. As a reminder, the ROAR Team is not a specific group of people, the ROAR Team, on any given mission trip, is the group of volunteers who are God’s hands and feet on the ground at a specific mission location.

The Team will arrive in Farmington on Saturday, July 30 and depart on August 06, 2022. As always, departure time may vary for some people. The Saturday arrival allows us to worship together on Sunday morning at the Fairbanks Union Church and tour the project sites on Sunday afternoon. We have breakfast and dinner as a group in the St. Jo’s fellowship hall and prepare our lunches to take to the job sites.

We are registered with MATE for the above week. We are scheduled for rooms in a dormitory at the University of Maine, Farmington Campus, and with St. Jo’s church for the kitchen and fellowship hall. At this point in time the college is requiring people who have been vaccinated to have their shot record card with them when we check in at the dorm. People who are not vaccinated will need to take a rapid COVID test after three days (that doesn’t make sense but that is their current policy). Updated information from the college will be passed along when it is available.

If you know anyone who is interested in being part of this ROAR Team, church member or friend of the church, please let them know about the dates and have them contact me, Terry Reed at, by phone at 717-766-2714, or see me in church.

Backyard Mission Trip is next week, June 20-24!
We will meet at the church at 9 am to be at our worksite no later than 9:30. We will work until 12-12:30, then have lunch together. Afterwards, we will go back to the church, and everyone heads home. On Monday and Tuesday we will be helping church members. On Wednesday we will help the Beacon Clinic. On Thursday we will do some work around the church. Then on Friday we will go to Knoebels! (50/50 for rain so we will keep an eye on the forecast for Friday.)
Students must come to at least 3 workdays to come to Knoebels. Let me know if you are coming!

Summer Retreat 2022
We are also going to pivot to local summer activities for the retreat. I am thinking of spreading it out through the summer, maybe every other Sunday? We can do activities like Dave and Busters, Trindle Bowl and Glow in the dark mini golf, Senators' game, Knoebels, Escape room, anything else you want to do. Let me know what you think.

Thank You
I would especially like to thank the Handy Helpers for helping me out with a project at my house that was more than I could take on alone. Their kind, thorough service to anyone at the church is fantastic help and eliminated stress for me. Thank You to you all. We are so blessed to have this service available at SSPC. ~Lin Pomeroy
