"Gentle Wisdom,
or Worldly Ways?"

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY
Sunday’s sermon, “Gentle Wisdom or Worldly Ways?”, is based on James 3:13 - 4:3, 7-8a. The letter of James offers us a picture of the all too human behaviors that threatened the unity and cohesion of the early churches. In particular, envy and ambition seem to have caused conflict that threatened the harmony of congregational life. Perhaps it shouldn’t surprise us that the early Christian churches faced the very same sort of conflict that churches have faced in the 2,000 years since the letter was written. After all, social climbing and competition for position and prestige were every bit as common in Greco-Roman society as they are in our own!

James, however, holds out another way of living, a way based on gentle wisdom, what he calls wisdom from above. What does that higher wisdom look like, and where do we find it in our day? And what might this have to do with the Tree of Life? Come on Sunday and find out!

See you in church -

Blessings,
Don

General
Sunday Worship Schedule
There are two worship services this Sunday-
  • 9:00 am Traditional Service in the Meeting House, and
  • 11:00 am Gathering in the Chapel

The Traditional Service will continue to be live-streamed and hopefully in the near future the Gathering Service will also be live-streamed. Be sure to look for the Gathering Service Banner outside the Chapel doors.

Masks Strongly Recommended: Wearing is Caring!
In order to keep one another safe, the Session has voted unanimously to follow CDC guidelines which strongly recommend that all those attending indoor events here at SSPC wear masks when others are present, regardless of vaccination status, so long as the COVID transmission risk in Cumberland County is “substantial” or “high.” We care deeply about one another as brothers and sisters in Christ, and wearing masks to help keep others safe is a clear way to express that mutual care that makes SSPC the warm and special place it is. Simply put, wearing is caring, friends.  In addition to getting vaccinated against the COVID virus, masks are a simple and effective barrier to prevent illness-causing respiratory droplets from reaching others. Masks provide the most protection when everyone wears one, especially in a community setting. Thanks for helping us keep one another safe and well. Together, this is one way that we are taking seriously our vision statement of becoming a grace-filled family of faith sharing Christ’s love with all!
Winding Hill
Fellowship Bike and Playground Event on Sunday, September 26th
Your fun-loving Fellowship committee is organizing a fun day at the Winding Hills North Park that will be ideal for families with young children, or grandchildren. This is a no-cost event, but you need to sign-up (maximum of 25 people). The event goes from 12:30 to 3 pm and starts with a picnic lunch. Families are then encouraged to explore the many paved bike trails around Winding Hill Park. In addition to paved trails, the park has flush bathrooms, 2 basketball courts, and a fantastic children’s play area with multiple slides, jungle gym, musical instrument area, mini rock climbing, multiple swings, a maze, a splash area, whirly round, shaded sitting areas and plenty of parking. The address is Winding Hill Park North, 901 E. Winding Hill Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.

Peacemaking Offering
Peace is Active, not passive, peace is doing, not waiting. On October 3rd, we will be collecting the Peacemaking Offering to help bring about change in our world. The PCUSA will receive 50% of the offering to help promote peace and reconciliation around the world through missionary efforts. Our local Presbytery will receive 25% of the offering to help support peacemaking work in our local communities. The last 25% of the offering will be used by our church to support the Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania to combat homelessness among veterans in Harrisburg by providing housing, support and services. Our offering offers light to those veterans living in the shadows and hope for a better tomorrow. It is time for us all to give back to those who have given so we can continue to enjoy our freedom. Through this offering may they know peace and that others care. If we all do a little, it adds up to a lot!

From your Worship Committee
The committee is gathering fabrics, textiles and tapestries from other countries to display on World Communion Sunday, October 3rd. Please contact Pat Ferris or Carol Bogar if you are have any of the above and please include the country of origin. Placement in the Meeting House is scheduled for Friday, October 1st at 10:00 am. Thank you.

If it is cancelled but things turn around in January or February, we will look at it again.

The Manna Project
The Manna Project began over 15 years ago at SSPC to help welcome newcomers to our church. We currently need more Manna volunteers, who are needed for one month out of the year, to deliver a loaf of baked bread and talk about what SSPC means to them with our visitors. Over the years, many people who are at SSPC today came in part because of a Manna visit. Would you please consider being part of the Manna team and share the Bread of Life with someone new? There is a 2021 sign-up sheet in the Gathering Place or please contact Carol Barstow, (717) 651-0238 or [email protected], if you would like to serve or have any questions.

Wednesday Men's Breakfast
The Wednesday men's breakfast group meets at the Peppermill Restaurant at 8:00 am each week. Please feel free to join us.

Opportunity to Serve
For the past several years, Mary Jane Jones and Connie Spangler, along with a team of ladies from the church, have graciously offered their service of time and hospitality by providing funeral luncheons following memorial services here at SSPC. We want to thank them for their many years of providing this wonderful service. They have retired from this role, and we are looking for someone who is interested in volunteering for this opportunity of service. Mary Jane and Connie are available to answer any questions and to train someone in all that is involved.  If you are interested in learning more, or would like to talk with them, simply call the church office at 717-766-0204. Thank you.

Earth Care -
Should you remove labels on plastics before recycling them?  Different recycling plants have different processes. If the label is a different material from the plastic, this can hinder the value of the product in recycling. The short answer to this is 'yes' if you can do so easily.
Mission
ROAR at Home Week
This year's fall Mission Trip will be in and around Mechanicsburg. The dates are Monday, September 27 through Saturday, October 02, 2021. We will work on projects around the church campus, the Retreat Center property and do repair projects at people’s homes through Rebuilding Together. The work day will typically be 8:00 am to 4:00 pm or as the project site dictates. There is work for skilled and unskilled volunteers (you will learn some skill before the week is over).

If you are interested in volunteering or need additional information please respond via email to [email protected], call Terry Reed at 717-766-2714, or see Terry at church.

ROAR Team Report from MATE
During the week of August 1 - 7, thirteen members and friends of Silver Spring Church answered God’s question, “Who shall I send” when they answered, here I am Lord.

The Team worked on six different project sites. The weather was relatively cool all week with a few rain showers. It was a very productive (and safe) week. We began the week with worship at the Fairbanks Union Church and then toured the initial project sites. The Team enjoyed a picnic at the Ratcliff’s home on Sunday evening and a picnic at the Fairbanks Union Church on Wednesday evening. The Team hosted the families we worked for on Thursday evening with a great ham supper prepared by our chefs Susie Reed and Ella Reardon. Our chef’s provided hearty breakfasts and evening meals for us throughout the week. To read more about the completed project sites, click HERE.

CROP Hunger Walk: About one month from now, we will gather with others in our community to fight hunger both here and around the world. We need walkers and sponsors for the Mechanicsburg area. The youth have done this for the past few years, and we would like to invite the whole congregation to get involved!

CROP Hunger Walk is on October 17, 2021, at 1 pm at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in downtown Mechanicsburg. Please contact Bryan Corbin for more details and to sign up to be a walker, a sponsor, or both (717-829-8844).

New Hope Ministry
Needs for New Hope Ministry this month include: Bisquick, Spaghetti sauce, and Instant potatoes. Items can be placed in the bin outside the Chapel. Thank you for your help in meeting the needs of our local community!
