"Easter Discipleship, Part 4:
Trust in My Healing Grace"

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY
This Sunday we continue our 5-part sermon series called “Easter Discipleship” exploring how Jesus intends his disciples to live in light of the resurrection. Part 4, “Trust in My Healing Grace”, focuses on Jesus as he encounters a group of invalids at the Pool of Bethzatha in Jerusalem. They are gathered around the pool because it was believed that periodically an Angel of the Lord would stir up the waters and the first person into the water would be healed. Jesus has been told that one man who lies there has been ill for 38 years – almost his entire adult lifespan! When Jesus heals him, the man’s reaction tells us that he is singularly ungrateful.  He lacks any degree of faith in Jesus. Especially in the gospel of John, this is the height of sin, as Jesus points out to him.

Does this man deserve to be made whole? Do any of us? What does it say about Jesus that he goes out of his way to heal a man with zero faith? How might you and I learn to trust in Jesus’ healing grace and to be more “grace-filled” as our SSPC vision describes? How might this change our lives and how we treat others?

Come on Sunday and find out!  Remember, one service outdoors at 11:00. And please plan to stay for a quick congregational meeting to elect officers and then . . . strawberries and ice cream!

See you in church (outside)!

Blessings,
Don

Christian Education this Sunday
There is no adult or youth Sunday School this week. There will be nursery provided for the single service this week at 11 am.

Sympathy
We extend our thoughts and prayers to the family of Nancy Hocker who passed away this week. More information on a funeral at SSPC will be forthcoming.

Pentecost Sunday - June 5, 2022
On Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the church. Each year, this celebration is marked by receiving the Pentecost Offering which nurtures the faith of those who ARE the church of our future – children, youth and young adults.

  • 40% of the Pentecost Offering remains with our congregation to support a LOCAL youth ministry of our choice. This year, we will be sending much needed assistance to Bethesda Mission Youth Tutoring Program in Harrisburg.
  • 25% goes to Young Adult Volunteers to train and equip them to engage in mission in U.S. and around the world.
  • 25% supports ministries with youth, ages 12-18
  • 10% of the offering supports Child Advocacy

Won’t you take time this week to donate to the Pentecost Offering and help our young people? You can either mail a check to the church or use the church website to make an online donation:
https://onrealm.org/silverspring/-/give/now Click on the down arrow for “fund” and choose Pentecost Offering. If we all do a little, it adds up to a lot!
P.S. – Don’t forget to commemorate the occasion on June 5 by WEARING RED!

Teacher Appreciation
On June 5th, we will thank and recognize our teachers and nursery care workers. Please thank them and congratulate them on the restart of our Christian Education program.

All-Church Summer Kick Off - June 5, 4-7 pm
The Summer Kick Off is June 5th from 4-7 in the gym and just outside the gym. This is now an all-church event including the preschool! We will do Pentecost tie-dye shirts with the youth. Of course, we will have some food to share a meal together. Also, we will have some games and activities for all ages! Come join us for this family fun event!

Volunteer Church Office Help Needed
Priscilla in the church office is looking for volunteers to help out when she needs a day off. This would involve learning phone, copier and general office procedures. No experience necessary! She is happy to discuss more of what is involved. We are not looking for a weekly volunteer, but rather someone willing to help from time to time. This would be a wonderful opportunity to serve your church!

Handy Helpers
We are available to help with several small homeowner issues including inside and outside maintenance problems, cosmetic house repairs, painting, shrub trimming and yard work, faucet and toilet repairs, power washing, step or ramp repair and helping to deal with contractors or various home service companies or minor needs as replacing light bulbs (plus other needs that are not listed). If you have any questions or requests, please call the Handy Helper coordinators Roy McLain at 717-421-2065 or Jonathan Service at 717-732-0618.

Vacation Bible School - August 15-19
Ages are first grade to sixth graders, inclusive. The counselors from Camp Krislund will be leading. There is no cost for any child whose family is a member of SSPC. We hope to invite other local churches to join us. Look for a signup sheet in the Gathering Place. There is no limit, but there will be a cutoff date, so sign up early, and bring a friend. Adult and teenage volunteers are needed to help one day or multiple days. Any questions, please contact Scott Pepperman or Laura Shoop, CE Co-Chairs.
1734 Legacy Society (A 5-part series)

Part 3: QCD - The Gift
Making a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from your required minimum distribution (RMD) from your qualified retirement account is an excellent way to both support the 1734 Legacy Society and Silver Spring Presbyterian Church and to minimize your Federal Income Tax obligation. It is truly a win-win situation.

If you are age 72 or older, the Federal Government requires that you take annual distributions (withdrawals) from your qualified 401(k) or individual retirement account (IRA). These withdrawals, which are referred to as the RMD, may be distributed directly from your IRA's to the 1734 Legacy Society and to Silver Spring Presbyterian Church in the form of a QCD. A QCD reduces your annual RMD. In other words, using your RMD for charitable giving via a QCD to the 1734 Legacy Society and Silver Spring Presbyterian Church directly reduces your taxable income.

You don't have to wait to age 72 to make a tax-free QCD from your qualified 401(k) or IRA. The SECURE Act of 2019 extended the age for making RMDs to 72 but left the age for making QCDs at 70 ½ and you may distribute up to $100,000 annually tax-free to your favorite charity. QCDs are a great way to reduce your income and estate taxes.

Please consult the administrator of your retirement plan, along with your tax or financial advisor, to determine the best alternative for making your QCD to the 1734 Legacy Society or Silver Spring Presbyterian Church. It is generally a simple and easy process. A good way to start making your qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is at the beginning of the tax year.

Please feel free to contact Bill Vipperman at 717-991-5825 or [email protected] or Bill Resser at 717-580-7667 or [email protected] for more information on the 1734 Legacy Society and Silver Spring Presbyterian Church.
Earth Care
Warmer weather is here which means cookouts, spending time by the pool, and spring cleaning! Here is an important reminder - Propane tanks, pool chemicals, rechargeable batteries, and live ammunition are all considered hazardous waste. NEVER place these items in your curbside trash and recycling bins.

MATE ROAR TRIP
This is a reminder that the ROAR Team will be returning to Farmington, Maine this summer. MATE stands for Mission At The Eastward and has been helping people in need for over 60 years. SSPC has been participating in this rural ministry in central western Maine for over 25 years. As a reminder, the ROAR Team is not a specific group of people, the ROAR Team, on any given mission trip, is the group of volunteers who are God’s hands and feet on the ground at a specific mission location.

The Team will arrive in Farmington on Saturday, July 30 and depart on August 06, 2022. As always, departure time may vary for some people. The Saturday arrival allows us to worship together on Sunday morning at the Fairbanks Union Church and tour the project sites on Sunday afternoon. We have breakfast and dinner as a group in the St. Jo’s fellowship hall and prepare our lunches to take to the job sites.

We are registered with MATE for the above week. We are scheduled for rooms in a dormitory at the University of Maine, Farmington Campus, and with St. Jo’s church for the kitchen and fellowship hall. At this point in time the college is requiring people who have been vaccinated to have their shot record card with them when we check in at the dorm. People who are not vaccinated will need to take a rapid COVID test after three days (that doesn’t make sense but that is their current policy). Updated information from the college will be passed along when it is available.

If you know anyone who is interested in being part of this ROAR Team, church member or friend of the church, please let them know about the dates and have them contact me, Terry Reed at [email protected], by phone at 717-766-2714, or see me in church.

New Hope Ministry
Needs this month for this local ministry include: coffee (no K-cups), cooking oil, and small bottles of Gatorade. Items can be placed in the wooden box outside the Chapel. Thank you for your continued support of this ministry!

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) and the Presbyterian Mission Agency (PMA) are working with partners to determine where funds can be directed for greatest impact. Click here if you wish to give to the PC(USA) response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
