"SSPC Values Part 4:
Nurture Relationships"

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY
Sunday’s sermon, “SSPC Values Part 4: Nurture Relationships,” continues our 5-part sermon series entitled “SSPC Values and the Season of Commitment.”  Throughout October, we are focusing on some of the Bible’s most beloved and striking passages to illustrate the 5 values that guide our worship and work as we live into our Vision of becoming “A Grace-filled Family of Faith Sharing Christ’s Love with All.”  Paul writes to the church at Corinth at a time when it has become seriously divided. Some are claiming special wisdom that elevates them above others. Not surprisingly, this leads to fractured and contentious relationships within the Corinthian faith family.

Paul’s ode to love invites the Corinthians to pursue the higher gifts of faith, hope and – especially – love. He also invites us to consider how well we are nurturing our relationships, both within this body of Christ and with our neighbors in the broader community and world. How is love expressed in our relationships? How might we become better at this? Come on Sunday and find out!

Sermons in this series:
Sunday, October 3 John 15:1-11
Sunday, October 10       Luke 10:25-37
Sunday, October 17       John 4:1-19, 27-30, 39-42
Sunday, October 24       I Corinthians 12:27-13:13
“SSPC Values Part 4: Nurture Relationships”  [Love and the Body of Christ]
Sunday, October 31       Matthew 16:21-25
“SSPC Values Part 5: Steward God’s Gifts”  [Commitment Sunday]

See you in church!

Blessings,
Don

  • 9:00 am Traditional Service in the Meeting House, and
  • 11:00 am Gathering in the Chapel
Season of Commitment
As most of you know, the theme of our Season of Commitment is “Moving Forward Together.” Each week in October we are highlighting one of the five Core Values our Session has identified as key to supporting our vision of “Seeking to be a grace-filled family of faith sharing Christ’s love with all.”

Last week, we discussed the value: Practicing Hospitality. Some of the ideas shared included:
·        Reaching out to those who are alone
·        Sending notes to new residents and new online attendees
·        Sharing meals/inviting others to join you
·        Inviting friends and neighbors to church activities
·        Being intentional about reaching out to others
·        Creating a welcoming atmosphere
·        Introducing yourself to people you don’t know
·        Wearing name badge at church
·        Welcoming late-comers
·        Sharing church spaces in the community
·        Seeking to offer assistance to those in need

Do you have others? Please send your ideas to [email protected].

This week in worship we’ll spend some time discussing our value of actively Nurturing Relationships. In Matthew 7:12, Jesus taught us, “So in everything, do to others as you would have them do to you,” while Ephesians 4:2-3 adds that we should treat each other with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

It’s been especially important during the pandemic for us to make it a point to actively nurture our relationships through communications and support. Individually – and through our Deacons, pastors and Stephen Ministers – we walk with each other, sharing life’s joys and sorrows and learning from each other through shared experiences. We try to inspire and respectfully encourage each other to greater faithfulness, becoming an important part of each other’s lives.

In worship this Sunday, we’ll be asked for your ideas regarding “What specific actions we should be taking as a church family – beyond what we’re already doing - in order to more deeply and meaningfully nurture all of our relationships?”

Please pray, think and talk about it. You can share your ideas in person at worship this Sunday, via the “Chat” function on YouTube if you worship remotely or you can send any suggestions you may have to the email address [email protected].

Please also prayerfully consider how your financial pledge for next year might enable bold ideas for living out our values by inspiring and informing our Session Committees as they put together our budget for 2022.

Please join us in Moving Forward Together!

Halloween party
Halloween Party
Your fun-loving Fellowship Committee is hosting a Halloween Party on Saturday, October 30 from 10:30 am to Noon outside in the parking lot next to the Gym.  If it rains, we will be inside the Gym. This is a Preschool and youth event, plus kids at heart can join too. Everyone is requested to come in costume, and wear a Covid mask.  There will be a costume parade with prizes, games, dancing, and treats to take home.  There is no cost for the event, and no sign-up required.  Just come and join the fun.

Thanksgiving Baskets
Due to ongoing concerns with Covid, the Deacons have decided not to do Thanksgiving boxes this year. In lieu of supplies for boxes, we are seeking $50 Giant gift cards to offer individuals or families. This would allow them to purchase a turkey or other items they need for their Thanksgiving dinner. Monetary donations are being accepted, with checks made payable to SSPC. Please put "Thanksgiving Baskets" in the memo line. If you know a church member, family, friend or neighbor in need of assistance, please contact Diana Gray, 717-440-3549. All referrals will be kept confidential.

Wednesday Afternoon Bible Study
We meet every Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 pm in the Parlor (please wear a mask). Our study is on The Women of the Bible Speak by Shannon Bream. For any questions, please call Carolyn Dorward (717.737.6481) or Ruth Stoll (717.697.6560).

Fall Work Day - November 20, 8 am - noon
The Buildings & Grounds Committee invites you to pitch in for Fall Workday, November 20th, if you are able. Most of our work will be outdoors. So bring your rake and/or leaf blower if you have one and join in. Coffee, donuts, and lunch will be provided. This is a great opportunity for all (members and friends) to get together as we prepare our church property for the winter season. Thanks for YOUR support on this day. Many hands make for a shorter workday.

Join us for Christmas Cantata Rehearsals
Please come and join us as a singer for our Christmas Cantata “HOPE” by Joel Raney. We will rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7:45 pm starting this week. Rehearsal tracks are available to help in learning the music for the Cantata on December 12th. Please email Kyle if you have questions!

Chancel Flowers
Flowers are a wonderful way to commemorate a special event, honor a loved one or praise the glory of God. A $35 contribution will provide chancel flowers to enhance the beauty of the Meeting House. Sign-up sheets are on the bulletin board in the hallway by the drinking fountain. Please prayerfully consider donating flowers so that we can continue this beautiful tradition.
Earth Care - Did you know?
Fall Suggestions for Birds:
•   Cut back spent tops on many perennials, but leave seed heads on grasses etc. These provide important food and shelter for birds.
•   Stock up on birdseed and suet. Leave hummingbird feeders up until 2 weeks after you have seen the last hummingbird.
Mission
New Hope Ministry: Thanksgiving need
With the serious supply chain issues nationwide, New Hope is experiencing challenges with ordering bulk for Thanksgiving this year. We will be collecting the following items in the bin outside the Chapel to help New Hope in meeting the needs of our local community:
  • Canned corn and peas
  • Instant Potatoes/Stuffing Mix
  • Canned fruit - any variety
Items should be here before November 15th. Thank you for your help!

ROAR Winter Mission Trip
We are back (hopefully) to a regular schedule for ROAR Mission trips. The winter trip for February of 2022 is in Gainesville, Florida. We will be working with Alachua Habitat For Humanity building new homes with Habitat partner families. The work week will be Monday, January 31 through Friday, February 04, 2022. Volunteers will arrive at the hotel on Sunday, January 30, 2022 with an option to arrive on Saturday, January 29, 2022.

The plan is to frame up at least two homes during the week. As always, you do not need building skills to be a part of the team. Everyone can do something to help build the homes and learn a new skill at the same time.

If you are interested in being part of the 2022 winter ROAR Team or need additional information please contact Terry Reed at [email protected], or call Terry at 717-766-2714, or see Terry at church.
