"God's Goodness through His Provision:
Feeding of the 5,000"

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY
Over the last four weeks, we have learned about “God’s Goodness,” where Don has explored the Old Testament images of God as the redeemer, provider, and the source of all blessing. Sunday’s message is based on one of the most incredible miracles of the Bible, the feeding of the 5,000 from the Gospel of Mark and which is the only one of Jesus’s miracles that is included in all four Gospels. God is the source of all good and abundance, which we recognize in our lives. But there is a tension in our experience as people still struggle with food insecurity and lack locally and globally, which Silver Spring addresses through its many ministries.

The firm deadline is September 6th. Look for the sign-up sheet in the Gathering Place, starting this Sunday, July 31st, or contact Scott Pepperman, 717-389-5100. Come to VBS
Vacation Bible School-
August 15-19, 9 am - 12 noon
Celebrating God’s World Vacation Bible School at Silver Spring Presbyterian Church is filling up rapidly.

Please call the church at (717) 766-0204 to ask about age group availability for VBS – some of the age groups are already full. Registration will close Friday, August 5 at noon. There will be no day-of registration available. For the safety of our children, the church must follow closely the state of PA’s requirements of current background clearances.

Thank you to all those who have donated the paper towel and toilet paper rolls – We do not need any more, but we need a few more egg cartons. We are also looking to borrow artificial house plants and artificial trees (Ficus trees, palm trees) that are easily transportable, as we are decorating the VBS areas with items that denote nature – (butterflies, birds, trees, plants), etc.  If anyone has netting – mosquito netting, etc. that would be helpful too. Members can place masking tape with their name on it on the bottom of the vase/planter of the item they are letting us borrow – we need everything by Sunday, August 14th, (at noon) as we will begin decorating that afternoon. Please leave items in the Gathering Place. We will take good care of them and return them to members after VBS.

Are you an early riser? Pastor Lisa needs help with preparing snacks for each day, from 7:45 - 8:45 am. Please email Lisa at lisa@silverspring.org if you can help out during those times.

Manna Project
The Manna Project began over 15 years ago at SSPC to help welcome newcomers to our church. We currently need more volunteers, for one month out of the year, to deliver a loaf of baked bread (may be purchased) and talk about what SSPC means to them with our visitors. Over the years, many people at SSPC today came in part because of a Manna visit. Would you please consider being part of the Manna team and share the Bread of Life with someone new? There is a 2022/23 sign-up sheet in the Gathering Place or please contact Mary Jane Voigt, 717-728-4332, if you have any questions.

Sympathy for John and Michelle Clegg
We extend our prayers and sympathy to John and Michelle Clegg on the death of Michelle's mother, June Morris, who was also our beloved long-time custodian. The service will be held in the Meeting House on Saturday, July 30th at 11:00 am, preceded by visitation at 10:00 in the Chapel and followed by a luncheon in the gym.

Dear Church Family,
In recognition of June Morris’s many years of faithful service to Silver Spring Presbyterian Church, we are taking up an offering for John and Michelle Clegg to help offset the costs of the funeral and luncheon afterwards. The Cleggs do not know about this, so we ask that it is kept confidential. There is an envelope in the box just outside of Pastor Lisa’s office with a green bow on it. Please feel free to put gifts of cash and checks made out to John and Michelle Clegg in the envelope. The envelope will be outside her office beginning Friday afternoon, July 29th, through Sunday, July 31st, just after the second service. We will give John the gifts on Monday, August 1st. After that date, please send any gifts to the office, attention to Priscilla.

Thank you for your consideration and God bless you!

Note from Matthew Robinson
Dear SSPC family – Please see the note below from our former member, Matthew Robinson, who was ordained this past Sunday afternoon to a teaching and pastoral ministry at the University of Bonn in Germany, where he, Christine, Wesley and Zola have been for the last several years.  As you will remember, Matthew has been under care of our Session as he moved forward in the ordination process. Sunday’s service was held online via Zoom with representatives both here at SSPC and there at the University Church in Bonn. Scott Pepperman and I participated in the Administrative Commission of Presbytery, along with several others.  If you would like to reach out to congratulate Matthew, his email address is matthew.ryan.robinson@gmail.com.

Matthew writes:

Dear All,

Just having a chance now to sit down and read and reply to your emails. Sunday was a bit of a whirlwind. Yesterday was jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire: my first day of ordained ministry was also the first day of the World Council of Church’s “Global Ecumenical Theological Institute”, in which I have the privilege of serving as a facilitator-teacher this year.

I want to express my deep gratitude and respect to you all for your wisdom and guidance throughout the preparation process of the past few years. I have been very touched by your enthusiasm and warm support.

The service itself was yet another reminder for me of how ordination and service in ministry is a calling to one coming from the whole community gathered in Christ’s spirit. Ordination is less for the ordained and more from the ordaining. It was also extremely impressive to me how strong the Presbytery has demonstrated its faith as a particular church in the Church universal, both in walking with me at such a great geographical distance and in celebrating such an ecumenical service. Several colleagues here also remarked on how wonderful this was.

So, thank you, all. Bless you. Peace be with all of you. I hold you in my prayers and in my heart. We will most assuredly remain in contact of course, in various formal and informal ways, and I look forward to seeing what lies around the next bend in the journey.

Blessings, Matthew
Earth Care
If your travel plans include a beach vacation, dedicate one morning – or even one hour – of your beach time to picking up trash. Joining a beach cleanup on vacation is a great way to connect with locals. Be mindful of your own garbage and pick up any litter you run across while you’re on the beach.
