"Jonah Days"

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY
Ever had those days when you were flat out disobedient? What happened? All of us probably have memories when we sassed a parent or teacher, or refused to do something because we simply did not want to - like helping out a parent, a friend.

But what about those times you sensed God was calling you to do something special - a new ministry or reaching out to someone in forgiveness, and you ignored that call? (Maybe you didn't.) Jonah's story is one of disobedience to God's call to ministering to the Ninevites, and sulking over God's grace to others. Come to worship on Sunday to learn more about the themes in Jonah, and to hear a short story about Pastor Lisa's own call story, which she calls her "Jonah Days."
Traditional Service at 9:00 am
The Gathering at 11:00 am

Summer Brunch Social - Sunday, August 14th
Come join your fun-loving Fellowship Committee for a Summer Brunch Social IN THE GYM from 10-11 am on Sunday, August 14th.  There will be a variety of finger foods perfect for a social time together between the two services.  Come and reconnect with others in the congregation.  We would love to see all of you there!

Silver Spring Road - Lane Restrictions - 8/13 & 8/14
There will be lane restrictions and flagging operations on Silver Spring Road, between 6 am and 6 pm Saturday (8/13) and Sunday (8/14). The northbound lane of Silver Spring Road will be restricted during these times. Weekend work is planned so a sanitary sewer main and lateral can be installed during lower usage times and because there is a lot of heavy truck traffic in this area during the week.
***Please be careful when traveling through this area.***

Sympathy
We extend our prayers and sympathy to Laura Shoop for the death of her father last week. Please keep Laura and her family in your thoughts and prayers. We also extend our prayers and sympathy to Donna Kazor for the death of her mother, Marion Weller, in July. Please keep Donna and her family in your prayers.

Blood Pressure Sunday
Join us in Room 201 from 10 until 10:45 am to have your pressure checked.

Adult and Family Bible Study will not be held this week but please enjoy the fellowship hour between services this week. We will see you August 21st, before our joint service.

Rally Day - September 11
The Membership and Christian Education Committees invite all SSPC members to the first Rally Day Pig Roast, on Sunday, September 11th. Come to Rally Day and visit the Committees at 9:45 am, in the Gathering Place. We will head to the Meeting House at approximately 10:45 to enjoy one service. After the service, you may make your way back through the Gathering Place to visit the tables and head to the gym for our pig roast, provided by Dickey's BBQ, in Mechanicsburg. The meal will be delivered, set up, served and cleaned up to all who attend. There is no cost for anyone! Donations will be accepted in the gym and are appreciated. So, come, explore our committees, worship as one body, and enjoy fellowship as we break bread together and kick off the church year, a new beginning! Look for a sign up to be available next week, both in the Gathering Place and online through Realm.

Mark your calendars for these special worship dates:
  • August 21 - One service at 11 am where VBS participants will present a pageant during the service.
  • August 28 - Hymn Sing Sunday & Blessing of the Backpacks—We will have a hymn sing at both services, 9 am and 11 am. We will also bless the youth Backpacks during both worship services.
  • September 11 - RALLY DAY! Come join the fun for Rally Day - One service at 11 am
Please join us on these special dates to support our youth and SSPC!

CE bus trip is back!
All the details are set for Thursday, October 6: Sight and Sound Theatre, DAVID, 11 am show…then a late lunch/early dinner at Millers Smorgasbord, then back to the church! $155 per person takes care of everything! The firm deadline is September 6th. Look for the sign-up sheet in the Gathering Place, starting this Sunday, July 31st, or contact Scott Pepperman, 717-389-5100. We are excited to offer this trip again and support our CE Programs.
Vacation Bible School
Silver Spring Presbyterian Church is hosting Vacation Bible School August 15-19, 2022. The theme is Celebrating God's World! The week will focus on Earth Care education and the telling of the Genesis story of God creating the world. Participants will enjoy crafts, songs, games, healthy snacks, and dramatic play. They will be performing a Creation Pageant/Play in church on Sunday, August 21, 2022 at 11 am in the Meeting House.

Thank you to all who donated paper towel and toilet paper rolls, and egg cartons. The children will be using the rolls in crafts, and they will be planting their own butterfly weed seeds to take home, nurture and plant to help those precious winged pollinators.

Also, a reminder about letting us use your artificial houseplants and trees for decorations – please bring them to church on Sunday, 8/14. We will make sure that they are safely returned to you. Please indicate on the bottom of the plant or tree whose it is. You may pick them up in the Meeting House on 8/21 after the service, and also in the Chapel.

What we need now are prayers: Prayers that God will be glorified through the telling of the Creation story, for stretched time for Pastor Lisa, staff and volunteers, logistics fall into place beautifully, that everyone will remain healthy and well, for travel mercies, and for a blessing-and-joy-filled time for each person participating, and their faith will be enhanced. Thank you and peace

August 21—One Worship Service after VBS
On Sunday, August 21st, there will be one worship service at 11 am. The children, youth and leaders from Vacation Bible School will be performing a Creation Pageant/Play based on Genesis 1, followed by singing a couple of songs learned at VBS. Pastor Lisa will give a brief homily prior to the performance. It promises to be a beautiful and meaningful performance as we “Celebrate God’s World!” The entire worship service, including the pageant, will be about one hour. Some of the children from SSPC Preschool and their older siblings are attending VBS, and some of our middle and high school youth are serving as youth leaders during Vacation Bible School this year. Please plan to come to church and see this wonderful performance live and support our young people in their endeavors!

Dining Out Group - Thursday, August 25, 5:45 pm
We will be dining out together at Visaggios, 6990 Wertzville Road, Enola, on Thursday, August 25 at 5:45 pm. We hope you can join us! There is a sign-up sheet in the Gathering Place, or call Arnita Hawkins at 352-630-5213.

Monday Evening Bible Study
Monday Evening Bible Study resumes due to popular demand on September 12 at 7:30 pm. We will meet in the parlor for approximately one hour. Fellowship after the meeting will be concluded by 9 pm.
We will meet on the second Monday of the month, and the fourth Monday of the month.

The topic for the fall season is “The Great Courses Series” on the Old Testament by Professor Amy Jill Levine of the Vanderbilt University Divinity school. We will begin at the beginning, and study the biblical timeline to the time of Jacob. Each session will include a 30-minute video presentation preceded by a 15-minute introduction, followed by 15 minutes of discussion and observations.

This legacy church activity has endured over 20 years of scheduled regular meetings to discuss the Bible, theology, and how we could be better Christians. For the past 2 years we have used Zoom to continue our study but have determined that meeting in person at the church provides a better experience. There is room for everyone so please join us on the 12th to determine if this study is right for you. Contact Tony Kren for more information 717-763-8131.

Looking Ahead
There will be a Presbyterian Women (PW) Luncheon on Saturday, September 24 from noon - 2:00. Lunch will be provided and the speaker will be Deb McClain from Beacon Clinic. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. More details to follow.

SIGN UP BOARD - All this will only happen when you volunteer! A large Sign Up Board will be placed in the Gathering Place in September so you can plan on where you can help out the most. We are looking forward a great event providing family-focused fun that benefits Mission projects!

Earth Care
The EPA says that watering the average-sized U.S. lawn 20 minutes a day for one week is equivalent to leaving the shower running for four days straight. With all of the heat and lack of rain, shouldn't we cut down on our water usage? Why not let your yard "go gold" during August and September? And cut down use in your home. Mission
New Hope Ministry
This months needs for New Hope are salad dressing, salt and pepper, and applesauce. All donations can be placed in the bins outside the Chapel. Thank you!

From the Ecumenical Food Pantry:
We are experiencing a severe spike in the need for our services.  Recent 2022 client activity is approximately 3 times the activity of 2021!  We have a significant need for more volunteers to assist in serving so many with food insecurity.  We are seeking volunteers who can offer at least a modest time commitment. Opportunities are available for 1.5 hours in the afternoon and/or 3 hours in the morning. Anyone interested can respond via the EFP website or call us at 717-233-6889. We thank you for your continued support in our mission to serve those in need.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) and the Presbyterian Mission Agency (PMA) are working with partners to determine where funds can be directed for greatest impact. Click here if you wish to give to the PC(USA) response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
