From the Desk of the Diocesan Secretary
Dear all,

As you read this I am sure many of you will be recovering from a busy period of parish activity celebrating the Platinum Jubilee. If you have not shared already what has been going on in your parish, then please do get in touch with the Communications Team as we are keen to celebrate all that has happened across our diocese. After a couple of years where much of our news has been about managing our response to pressure, a chance to share about the joy of celebration in our communities is one we don’t want to miss.

There is, as always, a lot going on across the diocese. With the announcement and imminent arrival of a new Bishop of Kirkstall and the fond farewell to Bishop Jonathan as Bishop of Huddersfield, there is change within the senior clergy team. Updates on arrangements and contact details during these times of change can be found on our website. If you need any help then please do get in touch and we will make sure you get the support needed.

This edition of Enews+ contains a more user friendly contents page which hopefully provides more detail on each item at first glance. This follows some helpful feedback. If there are other things it would be helpful for us to hear as we seek to improve our communications then please do let us know.

New from Church House
The Revd Canon Arun Arora appointed as new Bishop of Kirkstall
The Revd Canon Arun Arora has been appointed as the new Bishop of Kirkstall. Arun will take up the role of Bishop for the Leeds Episcopal Area after five years as Vicar of St Nicholas Church in the heart of Durham City. The appointment is a return to Yorkshire, where he served his curacy at St Mark’s Church in Harrogate.

“It is a joy and a privilege to be called to be Bishop of Kirkstall and to join the work that God is doing in Leeds. It is a particular delight to be returning to the Diocese where I was ordained and served my curacy, where my wife and I first lived and where our daughter was born,” said Arun. Read more about his appointment here.
Support for Messy Church
We are inviting small teams of Messy Church Leaders and those thinking of setting up Messy Church to join the Messy Church Greenhouse with a commitment to meet twice a year for two years. Greenhouse brings leaders of New Worshipping Communities together for encouragement, problem-solving, tips-sharing, prayer and planning to make your group strong and to keep it developing. This new Messy Greenhouse has a particular focus to pool all the wisdom and good practice out there.

Join the group and its accompanying national Facebook cohort to help your Messy church thrive and keep its focus on reaching new people and growing disciples. Gathering evenings are on Tuesday, November 15, 2022; Thursday, May 18, 2023; Thursday, November 16, 2023; and Thursday, May 16, 2024. Contact Liz Morton and Karin Shaw for details (karin.shaw@leeds.anglican.org and liz.morton@leeds.anglican.org).
Resources and supporting parishes
It’s been really positive to meet people at our recent workshops and training sessions who are looking to engage creatively with children, young people and families. We have a number of sessions before the summer holidays designed to help parishes looking to move forward. The Introduction to the Mission Toolkit on Tuesday, June 7 is an introduction to planning our mission with children young people and families in four key stages of engagement, nurture, discipleship and growing leaders and Engaging with Christening Families on Wednesday, June 15 looks at opportunities to share the hospitality of God as we build relationships with families seeking baptism, whilst Intergenerational Worship and Prayer on Wednesday, June 29 includes examples of good practice as well consider the significance of worshipping together.
Age-specific opportunities
We have a couple of sessions this month looking at the needs of particular age groups; Toddler Group Transitions on Tuesday, June 14 considers support for toddlers and their families as they prepare for the transition from church toddler groups to nursery or school and to continue on their journey of faith, whilst Engaging Young People in the Digital World on Wednesday, June 22 offers the chance to  explore the different ways in which we harness technology in church to aid work with young people.

Faculty jurisdiction rules – training sessions
The rules around what does and does not need a faculty are changing again on Friday, July 1, 2022 in response to the Church of England’s commitment to work towards ‘Carbon Net Zero by 2030’. In particular it will be easier to get permission for works that improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, while a stronger case will have to be made for putting in a new gas or oil boiler or any other work where an opportunity for reducing emissions is being missed. If you want to find out more about these changes, or if you are new to faculties and want to know more about the rules in general, you are welcome to join one of the DAC’s two online training sessions this summer:
Tuesday, June 21, 1.00-2.00 pm
Thursday, July 21, 7.00-8.00 pm

If you are unable to make either of those sessions, there is also a similar event being run at a national level, on Thursday, June 16. To register for one of our sessions, which will be held via Zoom, or to get details for the national one, please contact Rob Andrews rob.andrews@leeds.anglican.org or tel. 0113 3530 278. If you have any specific questions that are not answered by these sessions, please contact Stephen Craven, Church Buildings Support officer at Church House, 0113 3530 274.

New guidance on the Rules will also appear on the DAC pages of the Diocesan website in the near future and this will be announced via enews+ when it is ready.
Places of worship protective security funding
The Security Minister has announced that the Places of Worship Protective Security Funding Scheme has again opened for applications.

Places of worship and associated faith community centres can apply for funding for a range of security measures to help tackle the threat of hate crime. This could include the installation of measures such as, but not limited to, CCTV cameras, security alarm systems and perimeter fencing to improve security protection at their site and help worshippers feel more safe.

Further details of the funding scheme and how to apply are available online. Applications can be made until 23:59 on Thursday, July 14, 2022.
Local Community Insight Data Tool
If you are wanting to understand the needs of your parish better we can help. We use the Local Community Insight Data tool which will provide you with bespoke and up to date statistics and information about your area for your use. Everything from deprivation, health outcomes, employment, loneliness and much more. We will use this to help prepare for you a Parish Community Audit which will help identify some of the key needs and strengths of your community.

Free grant finding database open to Diocesan users
Last month, we reported that we have access to one of the UKs largest funding portals enabling you to find a funder for your project, whether it be for your church or community.

We are delighted to say we have had lots of interest from churches wishing to find funds for solar panels, youth workers, buildings repairs and upgrades to community facilities amongst other things and we have found funders who can help them progress with their exciting plans.

Would you like funding support? We can help you search the portal at a 1:1 session (contact becky.nicholson@leeds.anglican.org for more information) or you can join one of our planned sessions where you will be shown how to search for yourself. The next demonstration will be with Matthew Godfrey from Funding4Community on Thursday, June 23 at 12noon to 1pm. Click here to register your place.

We will be following up this session with our own 'How to write a great grant application' webinar on Monday, June 27 at 2pm-2.45pm. Please click here to register.

All the webinars will be recorded and available for you to view afterwards on our training webpage.

Vacancies
This vital role for the cathedral comes at a time of challenge and opportunity as we continue to negotiate the new landscape created by the coronavirus pandemic. Facing this challenge and seizing this opportunity requires us to make the most effective use possible of both new and traditional media to tell our story and ensure that the cathedral’s role at the heart of the city and as a mother church of the Diocese of Leeds is fully known and appreciated.
