Cultural Funding Updates
2021 Funding Year-in-Review
The COVID-19 pandemic impacted everything last year, just like it did in 2020. Once again gathering limits were put in place and venues were closed for lockdowns. Artists and arts organizations were called on to pivot, often having to re-work and adapt performances and events to engage audiences in new ways. Like the year before, the arts and culture sector came up with so many creative ways to share their art, interact and connect with the community.

To see a full list of successful 2021 SCCIP applicants, please visit the City's SCCIP webpage.
Investing in Culture
In 2021, Council approved a total of $400,000 in funding to 37 applicants. As the following chart indicates, 85 per cent of this funding ($339,000) was directed to organizations applying to the Sustaining Program (Core, Festival and Midsized streams), while the remaining 15 per cent ($61,000) was directed to Development Funding through the Arts Development, Culture Builds Community, and Culture Days Activity Programs.
1. Sustaining-Core | 2. Sustaining-Festival | 3. Sustaining-Midsized
4. Arts Development Program | 5. Culture Builds Community Program | 6. Culture Days Activity Program.
The St. Catharines Cultural Investment Program is key to building a strong and vibrant cultural sector in our community. In just six years, the City's investment in SCCIP has more than doubled, from $150,000 in 2015 to $400,000 in 2021, in grants going directly to artists and arts organizations.

In addition to this increase to the SCCIP budget, the source of these funds has also moved from the Civic Projects Fund to the City's annual Operating Budget, meaning this contribution is now coming from a sustainable funding source (rather than drawing from a limited fund). This helps ensure the arts community can rely on SCCIP funds well into the future.

Thank You!
Thank you to all the organizations and groups that applied for funding in 2021, employing artists and providing meaningful arts experiences to residents during this year of continued uncertainty.

Thank you to City Council for their continued support of the St. Catharines Cultural Investment Program.
