Guidance on Booster Dose of COVID-19 Vaccine

The FDA has now (9/22/2021) authorized use of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine as a booster dose to be given 6 months or more after completing the initial series, to people aged 65 or older, those at high medical risk for severe disease, and those with frequent occupational exposure to the virus. The CDC and DC Health are anticipated to release final recommendations on the use of boosters in the next few days. Once these are released, the GW COVID-19 leadership team will share instructions for qualifying MFA and hospital employees to receive and document booster doses. Please stayed tuned for more information!

GW Hospital

COVID-19 Vaccination Mandatory By September 30, 2021

The deadline to meet the DC COVID-19 mandate is quickly approaching. As a reminder, all healthcare workers in the District of Columbia are required to get at least the first dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine or the one dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine by September 30, 2021. GW Hospital is following this mandate and requiring that all employees get their COVID-19 vaccine as outlined above by September 30, 2021. Non-compliance will impact your ability to be licensed by DC Health or employed by GW Hospital.

We have the Pfizer and the Johnson and Johnson vaccine available in Employee Health. You can schedule your vaccination Monday – Friday, 7:45 a.m. – 1:45 p.m. here: https://calendly.com/gwmedicalenterprise1/covid19vaccine?month=2021-06. Please make plans now to get vaccinated. If you have concerns, speak with your supervisor, a Vaccine Ambassador or Employee Health.

Booster Shots Now Available for Immunocompromised

The CDC recommends that individuals who are moderately to severely immunocompromised receive an additional dose of an mRNA COVID-19 Vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) at least 28 days after the completion of the initial mRNA COVID-19 vaccine series. This includes people who have:

  • Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
  • Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
  • Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
  • Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
  • Advanced or untreated HIV infection
  • Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response

At this time, the third dose is only being recommended for this specific population of individuals. GW Hospital is now offering third dose shots of the Pfizer vaccine in employee health for immunocompromised individuals only. If you received Moderna and meet this criteria, please contact your physician or the location of where you received your vaccine.

If you meet this criteria, you can now schedule your booster shot in Employee Health here: https://calendly.com/gwmedicalenterprise1/covid19vaccine?month=2021-06. In order to support the flow of individuals, you must make an appointment for your shot. Please bring your COVID-19 vaccination card with you so that we can update this.

If you received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, there is not a recommendation to get a booster shot at this time.

DC Health has established a portal to monitor all DC healthcare worker COVID-19 vaccine compliance.

All healthcare workers in DC, including GW Hospital employees, regardless of whether they are licensed or not, MUST complete this form and state their vaccine status by September 30, 2021 to inform DC Health of your vaccination status.

Please see below instructions:

Vaccinated or Partially Vaccinated Staff:

1.)   Complete The DC Health Portal

Complete the online form by September 30, 2021. This link is located on the homepage of our intranet here: http://definingmedicine.corp.uhsinc.biz/Site/view.cfm?siteID=1 and a QR code is attached for completing with your mobile device.

  • Non-licensed employees:

List “The George Washington University Hospital” as the DC work place name

Use the hospital’s address:

900 23rd St., NW

Washington, DC 20037

  • Licensed employees:

You will need your license number to complete the online form. For your convenience, a link to the DC Health license database is available under the QR Code on the homepage of the intranet: http://definingmedicine.corp.uhsinc.biz/Site/view.cfm?siteID=1

2.)   To Submit Your Status to GW Hospital

Email your vaccine card to Employee Health: [email protected]. GW Hospital is required to maintain vaccinations records, as well as your submission in the portal. If we do not have your card documenting your vaccinated, we will need to remove you from the schedule beginning October 1, 2021.

Employees Seeking Medical or Religious Exemption:

Complete the portal information as outlined in step 1 above and upload the required documentation seeking an exemption directly to DC Health. Once submitted, DC Health will acknowledge your submission. A copy or screen shot of this acknowledgment must be given to your supervisor. Without this acknowledgment you will be unable to work beginning October 1st, 2021.

You must submit a submit request to DC Health regardless of if you submitted an exemption to Employee Health. Only DC Health can approve or deny the medical or religious request. It is expected to take 45-60 days to receive a response. Employees who have requested an exemption will be required to be COVID-19 tested weekly by Employee Health beginning October 1, 2021. Once an email/letter of approval or denial is received from DC Health a copy must be immediately shared with your supervisor. Approved employees will continue weekly testing. Employees whose exemption request is denied must receive the vaccine in order to remain employed.
