Welcome Back
Since we began the school year, I have had the privilege of visiting many of our schools to meet with teachers and students. I've seen some absolutely amazing outdoor learning spaces and creative ways to reconnect students with one another.

All this reminds me of the strength of the communities within our schools, how students and staff lift up each other, and how we become stronger for it. When we work together, we create safe, productive learning environments for students of all ages.

Seeing students and staff so excited to be in the classroom is a strong reminder of why I love Douglas County School District. I look forward to getting to know our students, staff and family members even better in the coming months!

Luke’s Team (Social-Emotional Learning in Action)

Sometimes our greatest learning comes not from textbooks or lesson plans but from overcoming the challenges life throws at us. Ponderosa High School senior Luke Karel is a straight-A student and varsity athlete. During his junior year, Luke's excitement for an amazing baseball season was met with off-field adversity: Acute Myeloid Leukemia. His teammates stayed in close contact with Luke as he spent 144 days in the hospital. All of it led to this incredible moment as the Mustangs celebrated their 4A Baseball Championship.

Apply for Free and Reduced-Price Meals
Although the USDA is providing universal free meals through the 2021-2022 school year, families are strongly encouraged to complete the annual application for free and reduced-price meals. Families approved for this program receive benefits including eligibility for the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) program, a cash-like benefit to purchase groceries for students to replace meals they would have normally received when in-person at school during the pandemic.

In addition, those who qualify for free and reduced lunch are eligible for reduced or waived school fees and transportation fees. Submitting an application also helps ensure that schools receive resources to support healthy meals for students and afterschool programs.

Bond Updates

Douglas County High School received many Career and Technical Education, or CTE improvements this summer. The auto, welding, construction trades, culinary arts, and agriculture program spaces were all renovated and/or expanded to include new industry-standard equipment.

Each of these CTE programs provides students with the chance to earn industry certifications and learn skills that will prepare them to enter college or the workforce.
