January 2024 NEWSLETTER

Sierra Pacific Great Pyrenees Club, Inc.

President's Message.

SPGPC is in the process of re-booting the Club. Since Covid 19, the coming out of Covid 19, the crazy and very challenging conditions over the past 20 months with rescue, the focus has been survival mode. We've worked on holding on, raising money and saving dogs and trying to address the immediate needs of the Club all while planning and holding a National Specialty combined with our four Regional Specialty in 2023 to satisfy our prior Covid commitments! Optimistically, we are emerging, resilient and determined as ever. Click the link for the SPGPC Membership Directory. New members will be added shortly.

Soon, we will be having elections for new officers of the Club. If you think you might like to sit on the board, there will be a list of positions and committees that you volunteer for, that would benefit the club. There is more information on elections further in this newsletter. Realizing that these are voluntary positions, it is not necessary to be an expert, just a willingness to help and to participate. The link will take you to the board positions and different committees within the club. If you would like to help or throw your hat in the ring, please let me know or fill out the form and email/mail it back to me. There is a deadline of Jan 31, 2024.

Speaking of volunteering, we have the GREATEST GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS anywhere. People step up for events, dog shows, workdays, grooming and cleaning the kennel and grounds, etc. Many, many volunteers are so incredibly helpful, that I don't know what we would do without you, truly! You are the BEST! And I can never say, "Thank you" enough. We do have a great group of folks who volunteer at the rescue, many walk dogs and help with puppies every day on a rotational basis, other help with grooming and errands and others work the off-site adoption events. If you'd like more information on volunteering just click the link here. It's simply not possible to express my gratitude to ALL of our volunteers, you are the heroes for your service (s) and donations you provide to the Club and the dogs.

Sadly, for anyone who knew (click the link) Patrick Henry our Club Vice President and friend, he passed away October 31, 2023. He will be sorely missed and was a constant support of rescue and every Club Event. I'm sure Sunny and Sue were waiting for him at Rainbow Bridge.

RESCUE has Puppies! Click the link to see the feature that was on Good Day Sacramento, December 15, 2023

This one is Grayson. He's 12 weeks old today and he's already neutered, had age-appropriate shots and is one of a litter of 10 that the Rescue whelped out on October 24, 2023.There were 8 boys and 2 girls. We have 4 males and 1 female available. Rescue took in their mother from a kill shelter. She was in rough shape...emaciated, matted, filthy and covered in vomit and waste! She was bathed and clipped and put in a clean whelping box just in case something were to happen soon. We took her to our vet and counted 10 puppies on the X-rays and 10 days later, our little family had arrived. All the puppies have been hand raised and are well started and very socialized always looking for laps to snuggle into. We also have a very nice adult male named Conner and there's a sweet female named April who is looking for a home. You can see our dogs that we have available for adoption on our website: https://spgpc.org/available/

GPCA National Show & SPGPC Regional Shows ~ April 23-29, 2023

Prior to Covid, SPGPC was selected to host the Great Pyrenees Club of America National Specialty Show. We decided to combine our 4 Regional Shows with the National Show to draw the maximum entries possible. We had already faced challenges while in Covid and coming out of Covid. Most of the Hotels in California were experiencing staffing shortages and most were closed to large gathering type events. In the past, the practice has been that National Shows must happen in a host hotel which can be very expensive as was the case for us. For our Club Regional shows, we use county fairgrounds, which are far less expensive because we can do our own food or hire our own caterers. In a hotel you must use their amenities and they disallow outside food and beverage service. As the host club we were given permission by the GPCA to negotiate and sign contracts for space, food and any other requirements, which are many for an event like this. While we had a large number of dogs turn out for the shows, the Hilton Hotel in Sacramento was not up to the task of the first-time experience of a National Dog Show. Communications were either nonexistent or differing from one manager to another or the management to their staff, space allotments that we were promised were sold out from under us while appearing on our contact, but we pivoted and overcame the obstacles, and everyone agreed it was a GREAT Specialty. We had over 137 entries, did a parade of rescue event, owner activities and games planned for everyone with a dog at the event. We had a "Sip and Paint" with your dog, obedience, rally and carting trials and of course, everyone rooted for the dog in conformation that caught their eye.

So, would we do this again? NEVER! NEVER AGAIN! The expenses were too high! Personally, we covered over $34,000. which were expenses which the National Club left to us. The National has avoided responsibility and all communication on the subject. I believe that they did not live up to their financial obligations and took advantage of our club. Apparently, we aren't the only ones who have experienced that over time. Keeping affiliated Regional Clubs whole, should be a priority of the National Parent Club and if expenses at hotels are not sustainable, alternatives should be utilized.
