Stephen Wares President, BABC Northern California
VP Business Development |
| Dear Members and Friends of the BABC, Summer has arrived and appropriately, as so many folks are away on leave, it is a time when our focus on events turns to more casual and social networking gatherings and we have plenty of opportunities for those coming up.
Mostly recently, on June 12th, it was “Afternoon Tea for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee” that brought us together, held in partnership with the Saint Andrew’s Society. 200 guests joined us in the Crown Room at the Fairmont in San Francisco to commemorate the occasion with our friends at Penfolds providing both Champagne and Wine – thank you Penfolds!. Our guests thoroughly enjoyed the event and it was great to see so many of them dressed up in true Ascot style with fancy frocks and fascinators, top hats and tails and Highland Dress. Congratulations to all the Raffle Prize Winners, Best dressed Lady and Gent and winners of the Royal British Trivia Quiz which my table actually won with the help of my guests. See the previous events section below for some awesome photos. Upcoming, on June 29th, we are back in-person at Werqwise in San Francisco for the 66th Annual General Meeting of BABC Northern California. Join us for some pre- and post- event networking and get caught up as we reflect on the activities or your organization over the past year and vote in the 2022-2024 Board of Directors. It is you, our members, that vote for the Directors and so if you have not had a chance to complete your ballot yet, please do so. You can register to attend here. The event, thanks to Werqwise, in their San Francisco location.
SAVE THE DATE! Friday, December 9th, 2022 at the Fairmont – the 59th Annual BABC Christmas Luncheon. Tickets and tables will go on sale soon. To express your early interest in reserving a table, please contact Jo Healey at jhealey@babcsf.org. We have a few sponsorship opportunities available:
Gold Sponsor - $5,500 Silver Sponsor - $4,500 Bronze Sponsor - $3,500
All sponsorships come with a table of 10, closest to the stage, premium wine, and promotional opportunities before and during the event.
Finally, it is great to see so many new and renewing members! Thank you for your participation in the BABC Northern California.
Sincerely, Stephen Wares BABC President |

Joe White, MBE Tech Envoy to the US & British Consul General San Francisco |
| Dear BABC Members,
Most of you are well aware that we celebrated Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this month. Marking this incredible accomplishment and shining example of a woman in power is an honour and an opportunity. There are so many incredible women in positions of influence in the Bay Area and across the Northwest patch in tech, government, and business. Some are trailblazers in their field and others set the modern standard for equity and foster the contributions and attitudes of the next generation. The Consulate holds inclusion and empowerment of diverse voices at the core of our work, and we’re proud to point to such an emblematic example of female leadership as we serve Her Majesty’s government in San Francisco.
The San Francisco Consulate Queen's Jubilee reception at the beginning of the month set the tone for enthusiasm across the Bay Area to see the Queen centre stage. We raised over $1,000 for the British Benevolent Society, enjoyed fish and chips, whisky and gin, and reflected on the influence of the British American community in California. We also lit up City Hall and raised the union flag at San Francisco City Hall, where the mayor proclaimed British Heritage Day.
Our Deputy Consul General, Tammy Sandhu, MBE, attended the BABC and Saint Andrew's Society of San Francisco's Afternoon Tea celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee on Sunday, June 12, 2022, which I heard was a stunning tribute to the greater part of a century on the throne. Your dedication to the British American relationship is noticed and appreciated.
June also mark’s London Tech Week, which I will be attending in person as I continue to strengthen the bridge between the UK and the Bay. And, of course, June is Pride Month. An LGBT+ trade mission of diverse founders will be visiting after a stop in Houston, with Minister Freer, to explore the opportunities found in a tech ecosystem based in one of the most diverse and open markets in the world.
The Platinum Pudding was announced last month, a beautiful lemon amoretti trifle, which I highly encourage you all to try at home as we mark seventy years of Queen Elizabeth II. Joe White MBE Tech Envoy to the US & British Consul General San Francisco |

UK GROWTH CAPITAL MARKET STILL RUNNING HOT |
|
2021 was a phenomenal year for the UK’s growth capital market. Investment activity not only surpassed that seen in 2020 – a year obviously impacted by pandemic concerns – but also that of previous years, breaking all recent records. In Moore Kingston Smith’s round-up of 2021, they questioned whether this level of activity would continue, given there were some economic ill winds on the horizon, but the answer is that it has continued in Q1 2022.

ARE YOU 'DESTINED' FOR EXPLOSIVE GROWTH? |
|
Why are we in business? Is it to make money? Yes. Is it to enjoy a livelihood we are passionate about? Naturally. Is it to leave a lasting legacy for our family? Absolutely.
But what about just for the sheer glee of it? The joy of starting something, and growing it, seeing it take shape, and witnessing it become something bigger than anything we ever could’ve imagined. As a businessperson, that’s often the part that gets you really excited, right? It’s that creation, nurturing, and of course, growth that often drives business owners.

BRITISHAMERICAN BUSINESS NEWS AND UPDATES |
|
Is a Hurricane Coming? BAB CEO Update - June 2022
Having been in London a few weeks ago I was all set to write my June newsletter to BAB members when news of the Conservative party confidence vote disrupted my thought processes. Boris Johnson has survived, for now at least. With a win as narrow as this, the usual outcome in the UK is a change, either now or soon.
As far as I know, no Prime Minister has received such a low level of support and gone on to survive but Boris seems to have a remarkable ability to get through scrapes that would be terminal for others.

WORLD PREMIERE OF UK DOCUMENTARY "DONNA" AT FRAMELINE FILM FESTIVAL IN SF |
|
We are delighted to share information about the World Premiere of a UK film at Frameline Film Festival in San Francisco on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at The Castro Theatre, with a VIP event at Beaux afterwards.
DONNA is a documentary feature film by Welsh filmmaker Jay Bedwani who makes his home both in Cardiff and the Bay Area. We are proud of this prestigious screening as the World Premiere of the film; it is one of only four UK features at the festival and the only one of these to have a world premiere. The SF Chronicle recently added DONNA to their list of films you can’t miss at Frameline. The film in an intimate portrait of a San Francisco icon – Donna Personna, a trans activist, performer, raconteur and all-around personality. He hopes your members will find the UK film about a SF personality is a lovely reinforcement of the UK-San Fran ties. |
