PREPARING FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR
A Message from Interim KOSON CEO Dr. Johnson
Dear STEM School Highlands Ranch Community,

Greetings STEM Spartans and happy summer. Earlier this week the Board appointed me to serve as Interim CEO of KOSON Network of Schools while they determine the next steps in the hiring process.

I am excited to take on this new role so that I can continue our replication efforts and complete the mission of the Board. As I take on these new responsibilities, I will be working with Ms. Kovalesky and her team to ensure that my STEM-related responsibilities are reassigned to specific Leadership/Administration Team members.

The goal in doing so is to ensure that there is no interruption in service provided to our staff and students. While I will still be available to assist where needed, my role will be to manage the day-to-day operations of the KOSON Network of Schools, which will continue to focus on our replication efforts as well as completing all Board-related tasks and Board-assigned duties.

My direct reports include the following staff members and departments:
  • LynAnn Kovalesky, STEM School Highlands Ranch Executive Director
  • Star Ake, CFO and the Business Office
  • Robert Hoornstra, Facilities Director
  • Nicole Bostel and Communications
  • Mike Pritchard and the IT department
  • Human Resources

All of these entities will also work closely with LynAnn to ensure their relative and respective functions for our flagship campus continue without any interruption or change in service and support.

I want to thank our entire community for their support. I am honored and excited to be supporting this amazing community in this new capacity.

Dr. Karen Johnson
Interim CEO
KOSON Network of Schools
A Message from Executive Director Ms. Kovalesky
Dear STEM Community,

By now I’m sure you’ve all heard the news that Dr. Eucker has decided to retire and that Dr. Karen Johnson has been named Interim CEO of KOSON Schools by the Board of Directors. I understand that this is big news for our community and I wanted to provide a message of reassurance that I am excited to be continuing in my role as Executive Director of our flagship campus, STEM School Highlands Ranch.

The Leadership and Administration Teams at STEM have been working all summer to ensure that we continue the positive progress that we began last school year. I am excited about the team that we have coming back and cannot wait to welcome back all of our students. We’ve also made a great deal of progress hiring for our open positions. As soon as we have an official signed contract from our new members, we remove that open position from our website.

Here are some of the items that we are still working on as we head into the final month of the summer.
  • Preparing for Express Check-In
  • Finalizing hiring of our open positions
  • Preparing for teachers and staff orientation (week of August 1)
  • Assigning job functions of the Director of Curriculum and Accountability
  • Preparing for the first weeks of school
  • Developing communications and procedures around construction impacts

I strongly encourage our entire community to review the weekly newsletters that are being sent to your emails. This is the best way to be as informed as possible to start the school year. We are currently still on summer hours, which means that we are only open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesdays, but we can be reached via email.

I hope you all continue to enjoy the rest of your summer and we’ll see you in August!

LynAnn Kovalesky
Executive Director
STEM School Highlands Ranch
STEMk12.org/Parents/Get-Informed
Informed families are empowered families. We want to make it as easy as possible for families to access all of the information needed to help their students have the best experience possible.

Families can find more information about the Student/Parent Handbook, Transportation Management Plan/Driveline, Attendance Information (Guidelines, Absence, etc.), Lunch Program, Technology Support, Health Services and more.

Attendance: If your student is ill or late, please call the attendance line (303) 683-7836 by 8 a.m. stating a clear reason why they are missing school or if they will be late. After 8 a.m., any students who are not excused will be designated in the system so that families receive a phone call from the auto-dailer. The attendance dialer will inform parents if a student is absent or tardy.
  • Secondary: If your student is late, they must check-in at the front office prior to going to class; Secondary students will need either a note from their parents, doctor's office, etc., or a phone call from the parent.
  • Elementary: students MUST be signed in by a parent.
A student should not come to school/will be sent home if they exhibit any of the following:
  • Skin eruptions/rashes
  • Nausea / vomiting / diarrhea
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Fever of 100 degrees or higher
  • Eye drainage
Other conditions that are indicators of illness and are considered when determining illness are:
  • Decreased activity – droopy, tired appearance
  • Irritable behavior
  • Sore throat / swollen glands
  • Runny nose/cough
When can a child return to school?
  • After 24 hours of medication for the following conditions:
  • Strep throat
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Infected skin eruptions
  • Other conditions requiring antibiotics
The student has been free of the following conditions for at least 24 hours:
  • Fever
  • Eye drainage
The student has been free of the following conditions for at least 48 hours:
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

Attendance Correction Form: If you notice in the Parent Portal that your student's attendance is incorrect, you can complete the attendance correction form.
  • It is an Editable PDF that you can fill out, save and attach to an email to your student’s teacher who marked them absent.
  • The teacher will then complete the bottom portion of the form and submit it to the appropriate front office for processing.

Extended Absence Form: In the case that your student will not be at school for a prolonged period of time for travel, medical, etc., it is crucial that plans be made ahead of time to help students maintain success here at STEM. If students are gone for 10 consecutive days, they are at risk of being unenrolled at the school. The student's spot at the school cannot be guaranteed after an extended absence encompassing the months of May through September. You will continue to receive school truancy communication.
Extended Absence Form Process:
  • Contact administration with the dates of the absence
  • Set up a conference or email the teacher(s) to develop a plan
  • Make teacher aware of internet accessibility or other potential challenges
  • Provide a physician's note (medical) to administration

Early Dismissal: A student will be excused to leave class with an Early Leave Pass from the office.
  • The student may exchange a note from the parent for the pass at the office.
  • A phone call to the office will be needed for younger Elementary School students.
The course of action that will cause the least amount of disruption to the classroom is to:
  • Pick your student up during passing periods
  • Send a note in with your student to receive an Early Dismissal Pass (students will be able to show this to their teacher before class begins, and leave at the appropriate time).
  • NO unscheduled early pick-ups will be allowed after 1:15 p.m.
