Greetings to Our Hub on Canal Supporters,

We love our Hub members. They're an important reason that we're able to serve the community the way we do. They're not just generous and supportive. Many of them are accomplished artists and you might know that in July in our Founders Gallery, we present an exhibition of members' artwork. It's open to any member, and each year we provide a theme for each artist to interpret.

This month we asked that each work celebrate the Hub's 10th birthday. You're bound to see an extensive range of ways our birthday is recognized. I hope you'll stop by and see what our members have created. All of the art is for sale.

Sticking with a focus on art in The Hub that is not created by our resident artists, I want to make absolutely certain that you don't miss our Outreach Corner posted further down the page. It's a great story. Here's a bit more detail.

A part of our MIssion now explicitly emphasizes making art fun and approachable. Some months ago, we discussed the idea of suspending "slices" of a larger image from the back of the treads in our open staircase. The debate focused on what the image would be and how our artists would work together to create it. A solution eluded us. Then the lightbulb went on. We'd let some of our Outreach kids create the art. Over a few week period, the older Access and Transition students in the ESE program at NSB HS worked with our instructor Denise Bell to paint the Picasso-inspired image.

The kids really didn't understand the scope of the project while they were painting. We installed the 13 strips on June 1 and the young artists came to The Hub for their last visit of the academic year on June 2 and saw the finished product for the first time. It was a magical moment, and we're so happy we could help these children find an artistic voice. It seems this story touched you too because this was the most liked, shared, and commented upon post we've ever had on social media.

Broadway at The Hub
In the Heights, Paul Marino
Friday, July 8, 5:30-9pm

Lin-Manuel Miranda burst into our collective consciousness with 2015’s Broadway smash Hamilton.  In reality, he had already achieved major success 8 years earlier when In the Heights opened on Broadway.  As with Hamilton, Miranda wrote the music and lyrics and starred in the initial production.  In the Heights, winner of 4 Tony awards, tells the story of a predominantly Dominican Washington Heights neighborhood of Upper Manhattan.  It features strong character development as tracks the residents’ pursuits of their “suenitos” (little dreams) of a better life. (More)
Art in the Form of Film:
Proof (2005)
Friday, July 22, 5:45-9pm
This highly engaging film explores the fine line between genius and madness. A renowned math professor (Anthony Hopkins) has an equally if not more gifted daughter (Gwyneth Paltrow) who questions her own sanity and whether she is the true author of a ground-breaking proof in her father’s notebooks. A research assistant (Jake Gylenhall) may or may not be pretending romantic interest to steal the proof to claim as his own. (More)

For most people, a regular-sized business card will suffice, but The Hub's Rita West needs a 4 x 6 size card to adequately represent the breadth of what she does here. Four years ago, when she started as a volunteer at the front desk, she probably never would have thought she would wear as many hats as she does today.

Within a year of coming on board at The Hub, Rita was selected as a front desk staff person. Shortly after that, she took on the responsibilities of the Founders Gallery coordinator. And after the pandemic, Rita officially added the Music Coordinator role to her ever-lengthening responsibilities at The Hub.

Even though she spent her professional career as an accountant, she started making jewelry in 2004 and parlayed it into a business. While she was home during the pandemic, she put her focus back on her creative endeavors. After a couple of successful selling seasons in our Gallery of GIfts, she went through the process of becoming an official Hub jewelry artist. She is now sharing Studio #2 with Susan Stern and Martha McLeod.
We're excited to reveal our latest art installation project. Referred to as the "stairs project," the Picasso-inspired image was created by the Access and Transition students in the ESE program at NSB HS. The kids were unaware of the scope of the project as they created the panels. They came by The Hub yesterday to see the finished product for the first time. They were thrilled, and so are we. Stop by and see it in person.
