December Exhibition Opening in The Founders Gallery

Under Pressure, selections from the Seminole County Printmakers. The creation of art is often a solitary process. While each piece ultimately results from the creative effort of a single artist, the artists of the Seminole County Printmakers actively collaborate and support one another.

Sometimes Art is a team sport. “Under Pressure,” of course, hints at the process of creating the finished product by pressing paper onto an inked, carved, or etched substrate. Printmaking is a unique art form. Join us to see the efforts of the Seminole County Printmakers. Opening from 4-7pm. This exhibition is through December 30.

Can 2022 really be drawing to a close? Was it Einstein that observed that the older you get, the faster time passes? Perhaps that wasn't exactly what he said, but it sure feels that way to me. Sooner than I expected, the holidays are upon us.

If it's December, it must be time for The Hub's Spirit of Christmas activities. Our Gallery of Gifts is the place to finish your holiday shopping. We've got unique, artist-created gifts suitable for most on your shopping list. If you're reading this in early December, The Hub also likely still has some fully decorated and stunning trees and wreaths that you can scoop up for a ready-made Christmas for yourself, a loved one, or just a friend in need of holiday cheer. Our Art of the Trees celebration features trees and wreaths generously decorated by Hub friends so that 100% of the sale proceeds go to our Outreach Art programs.

The holiday season also means our regular music night goes holiday. We've got a special event planned this year. Join us on December 9 for a 2-part holiday spectacular. To open the event, a choral group from Indian River Elementary school will sing a selection of Christmas carols. After the little ones, the program will conclude with the Middle School Jazz Band bending their repertoire to bring you holiday music. Step back for a moment to a simpler time and come out and support the kids. Admission at the door will be whatever you choose to donate.

Speaking of kids, the holiday season also means it's time for our winter art camps. We've expanded our offering this year. If you have young children or grandchildren who enjoy art classes, we can help them have a marvelous holiday break. Scholarships are available.

Finally, you might have heard that due to flooding at the Brannon Center, we had to postpone our disco-themed gala, Friday Night Fever. The new date is Friday, January 20. The postponement means that you still have a chance to get tickets or a table or become a sponsor. A link to the gala site is below.

Annual Christmas Concert

December 9, 2022 - 6:30-8pm

Join The Hub for our annual Christmas concert of holiday classics.

The Indian River Elementary Manatee Chorus will open the concert, followed by the New Smyrna Beach Middle School Jazz Band.

All ticket sales support The Hub’s newest outreach program, Hub on the Run. In cooperation with Volusia County Schools, Hub on the Run is kicking off this academic year. In an effort to supplement and support our local elementary school art teachers, Hub on Canal artists and art instructors will take over their classrooms for 3-5 consecutive days. The Hub's artists and art teachers will be in the classroom for the number of days necessary to see every child in the school, augmenting the teacher's curriculum with a unique art project that all students will complete and take home. Hub on the Run will visit all New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater elementary schools, and the instruction and supplies are provided at The Hub's expense. We are happy to find a new way to support the art interests of so many children in our community.

Admission at the door: donation in any amount to support Hub on the Run, The Hub’s newest outreach program. Doors open at 5:45pm. (More)

Art in the Form of Film:

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

Saturday, December 16, 5:45-9pm

This film, adapted from a novel by Jack Finney, was named by critics as one of the best horror/sci-fi movies ever made. It hit the silver screen in the mid-1950s amid rising fears of communism and blacklisting. Many people saw a foreboding political allegory, although Finney defended his work as nothing more than entertainment. Allegory or not, the film similarly seems to speak to a growing tide of anxiety in today’s America. There have been three remakes, but none compares to the original zombie-like pod people in this black-and-white classic. (More)

She's still chalking...Hub artist Sheri Zanosky just won BEST IN SHOW at the 23rd Annual Family Days Festival, chalking for Arthaus. She has participated in the competition every year since its inception. The Volusia County Sheriff's Department was the organization that sponsored the space Sheri chose to cover with an amazing black cat composition.

In addition to being the Best in Show at the Family Days chalk event, she was runner up for Best in Show at the One Daytona Art Festival chalk competition with her rendition of a fish just one week prior. It was a winning month for Sheri!

Sheri will be among dozens of other competitors in The Hub's 6th Annual Chalk it Up! sidewalk chalk art festival on February 25th along Canal Street in New Smyrna Beach. Art Fiesta takes place in Old Fort Park that weekend as well. Registration for Chalk it Up! is free until just before the competition. Chalk it Up! welcomes competitors of all ages and degrees of experience. Reserve your spot now.

We're two months or so into the new school year. Many of our Outreach programs are tied to that calendar. Not least, the Razzle Dazzle Fashion Club. We're working on another great year for this program. About 15 Fashionistas are hard at work creating garments for the May fashion show. Hurricane Nicole interrupted some of their weekly sessions so these dedicated young designers spent their Sunday morning at The Hub catching up.

Dedication and commitment are on the docket alongside straight hems and creating buttonholes. Mark your calendars for May 7 so you don't miss the Razzle Dazzle Fashion Show at the Brannon Center.

The Hub on Canal welcomes applications from Central Florida artists for wall display or working studio space. The Hub is open 7 days a week with more than 40,000 visitors annually. In particular we are currently seeking applications from Sculptors, Contemporary Ceramists, Jewelry Designers, and Painters in a variety of mediums.
