January Exhibition of Wearable Art

Wear Your Art! A Juried Wearable Art Exhibition

Opening: January 7, 2023 - 4-7pm

Exhibition through January 29, 2023

A juried wearable art exhibition of artistic statement pieces designed to be worn. Art of Adornment includes handmade jewelry, clothing and accessories created from an amazing array of materials.

Perhaps more than any other time, closing out one year and beginning another leads naturally to looking ahead. Sometimes the view is a bit cloudy, but it's also the case that our nature leads us to a reset--a view that whatever bothered us in the year just ended will abate and the odds for improvement rise. We hope we can be a part of your brighter 2023.

January is always a big month for music at The Hub, and this January will live up to those traditions. Our regular music night will feature the return of Carl Bennett and his John Denver tribute performance. Some of you will recall from 2018 that Bennett's reproduction of John Denver's amazing songbook is remarkable. Later in the month, we'll feature the Ben Rosenblum Trio at our 10th Jazz 'n Blues. Rosenblum is a jazz keyboardist extraordinaire. His trio is based in New York. They've recorded 3 albums and will perform at The Hub as part of the southern leg of their national tour. If you care about jazz, don't miss this performance.

If you'll allow me to look a bit ahead, I'd like to highlight the return of the actor Larry Murphy in George Stevens' Thurgood. In celebration of Black History Month, we will present Murphy's masterful performance of the Broadway play to New Smyrna Beach on February 3. The triumphal screenplay tells the story of a trailblazing lawyer and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. We've arranged for the performance to take place in the auditorium at New Smyrna Beach High School. More information is nearby.

Finally, I rarely mention classes and workshops in this letter, but that's a missed opportunity. It's past time to emphasize feeding your brain. The Hub offers an incredibly wide range of one-day workshops and ongoing classes. We obviously feature art classes but language, writing, and yoga are available too. As if the fun and camaraderie were not motivation enough, a 2019 study from the Mayo Clinic found that the pursuit of creative activities in middle age and beyond staves off dementia and preserves memory. How about that! Download a pdf of our monthly flyer below. It includes everything happening this month at The Hub.

Art in the Form of Film:

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Paul Marino

Friday, January 13, 2023 - 5:45-9pm

Silver Linings Playbook is a smart romantic comedy that seamlessly blends great writing with excellent performances, put forth by Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro. The central narrative manages to portray the challenges of mental illness with dignity, respect, and even humor, but never at the expense of its lead characters. A must see, or see again. Instructor Paul Marino will introduce the film, raise questions to ponder and host a post-viewing discussion. (More)

Jazz ’n Blues X featuring the

Ben Rosenblum Trio

Saturday, January 28, 7-9pm

Pre-concert reception from 6-7pm with Holly Tinny performing

We started a tradition ten years ago of bringing you the very best in jazz for our annual Jazz 'n Blues event. The Ben Rosenblum Trio may be our most pedigreed jazz performers ever. Rosenblum leads his trio from the keyboard. In a variety of configurations, including as a soloist, Rosenblum has toured North America, Europe and the Far East, taking the stage at both Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. The jazz press has heaped praise on Rosenblum's multiple albums. The Hub is extremely pleased to present the Ben Rosenblum Trio as our featured performers for Jazz ’n Blues X. Accomplished jazz, blues and R&B singer (not to mention local favorite) Holly Tinny will perform at our pre-concert reception from 6-7pm.

Fee: $15 at the door. Doors open at 5:30pm. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. (More)

We are so proud of our Sandy Lloyd. On December 4, 2022 Sandy was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. The ceremony was held at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona and Sandy was presented with her commemorative bronze sculpture by the Secretary of State of the State of Florida. She was one of 6 inductees that day. The award recognizes achievement in all forms of the arts. Importantly, since the Hall of Fame was created in 1986, Sandy is only the second artist from Volusia County to be so honored.

Sandy has spent her long life painting nearly exclusively Florida landscapes. She's a native Floridian so she's had plenty of opportunities to observe our beautiful natural surroundings. She has worked across the different painting mediums, and at one time was the President of the Florida Watercolor Society.

We are proud that Sandy has been a Hub artist since our founding days in 2012. In addition to being an extraordinary painter, Sandy is one the kindest and most humble people you'll ever meet. Please join me in congratulating Sandy Lloyd on this incredible honor.
