JUNE 2023

June Founders Gallery

Saturday, June 3, 2023

Opening: 4-7pm

Emerging:

A Mix of Local & Promising Talent

Daytona State College

Studio Arts Students

The students included in this exhibition are either seeking an art degree or taking DSC courses as an elective to enhance their skills and knowledge in the fine arts. These promising and talented students are displaying their growing levels of skills and creativity in this show, Emerging. The exhibition is through June 25.

The Hub on Canal and Jane's Art Center have been one for about 45 days. Most of our initial integration steps have taken place, and we are now planning our life together. We've emphasized this before, but it's important to highlight that while The Hub and Jane's are now one legal and financial entity, each will retain its own personality.

As you likely know, Jane's was gifted to The Hub in late March by Terry Jane England, the Jane's Founder. It's our plan that this extraordinary gift kicks off a new chapter in the art history of New Smyrna Beach. The Hub and Jane's began years apart, but each sought to serve similar purposes. In each case, the idea was to take a big step forward, bringing the arts to the community. The Hub focused broadly. Jane's targeted an unexploited niche--ceramics. Both organizations have succeeded along their different paths. The new combination is greater than the sum of its parts. Watch for what we can achieve together.

I hope you've had an opportunity to visit Jane's. If you haven't, you need to. Over the last 12 months, the beautiful contemporary gallery at Jane's has evolved closer and closer to exclusively ceramics. You'll find a wide range of pieces and price points, from mugs and bowls to amazing and decorative works of art. Everything is one of a kind and handmade. For a select few of you, there's work from collectible potters whose work is sought after on the internet.

The gallery at Jane's turns heads, but arguably, the heart of Jane's is the clay studio. In four or so short years, the teaching facility at Jane's has evolved into one of the very best in all of eastern Volusia County, boasting multiple credentialed faculty members as instructors. A full range of classes, workshops, and open studio time can guide you through proficiency to mastery in both hand-building and wheelwork. We've got big plans in the works.

Come and see what's up at Jane's. Stay tuned and watch what we'll do together. It's a new day for the arts in New Smyrna Beach. To whet your appetite, here's a folder of photos from Jane's.

For 25 years, Volusia County has appropriated money for funding cultural grants to arts and culture-related not-for-profits around the County. A body called the County Cultural Council has taken applications from not-for-profits providing arts and cultural activities for Volusia County residents. The rigorous application and approval process ensures that these operating grants are only awarded to applicants demonstrating a history of excellence in serving the community. The Hub on Canal receives some of these funds.

The Volusia County Council recently proposed eliminating the Cultural Council and terminating all arts and cultural operating grants. Volusia County Council Chair Jeff Brower and Commissioner Don Dempsey led the movement to cease this funding. Commissioners Jake Johansson and David Santiago succeeded in postponing any decision until June, giving us time to fight this short-sighted and ill-conceived action.

Arts and Cultural activities are proven to contribute more to economic activity than the dollars invested in their promotion. There's also no doubt that the community thrives in the presence of a robust arts and cultural offering.

The effects will likely be profound if the County Cultural grants are eliminated. For some organizations, these grant dollars matter a lot. Across our County, there will likely be job losses. Programs that serve the public, especially those supporting the disadvantaged and offered at no cost, will be trimmed or eliminated. Some small organizations may be forced to close.

Please join us in telling our County Council that you want these grants to continue. Our collective voices can stop this effort which will harm our County. Please reach out to these Councilmen to let them know how you feel. Thank you.

Brutalism

Mike Nelson

Opening: Saturday, June 3, 4-7pm

On exhibit through June 24, 2023

Brutalism is an architectural style with an emphasis on materials, textures, and construction, producing highly expressive forms. MIke Nelson's work in this exhibition emphasizes the design element of texture. His technique is distinguished by a vocabulary of slashes, swats and pokes-markings that surround each piece, allowing the viewer to interpret what they see. MIke makes, and remakes each piece, allowing the art form to emerge with as little intervention as possible. Multiple pieces are thrown on the wheel, torn apart and reassembled. The dull finishes emphasize the Brutalism aspect of Mike's work.

Art in the Form of Film:

Paths of Glory (1957)

Paul Marino

Friday, June 16 - 5:45-9pm

An early film by the great director Stanley Kubrick, this black-and-white drama is set in WWI and stars a young Kirk Douglas. Its plot is loosely based on a true story about three randomly chosen French soldiers who were unreasonably executed for cowardice after a near-suicidal mission failed. The film’s portrayal of what transpired was so powerful that when first released, the film was actually banned by the French government as it wanted no reminder of the commanders’ incompetent disregard for the safety of his soldiers in the trenches. (More)

The 5th Razzle Dazzle Fashion Show is now a wrap and this was the best one yet. Our 15 Fashionistas sent 50 garments down the runway at the Brannon Center on Sunday, May 7. That was the most our kids had ever produced, and it was of the notably highest quality ever. We are so proud of what they accomplished. If you were there, you know how impressive it was. If you were not, you are going to want to make sure you don't miss next year's show. We're pleased to highlight that one of our young designers was awarded a $2500 scholarship at the event to help him kickstart his professional design career. The link below will take you to 29 photos that provide a taste of the event. You can find nearly 10X that number on our website under the Signature Events tab. A big thanks to all of our sponsors, especially our presenting sponsors, Massey Services and NSB Homes--Luxury Group.

Huge congratulations to Hub artist, Deborah Hildinger, for winning Best in Show at the 2023 Shrimp Art Show! The Shrimp Art Show is a part of the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival in Fernandina Beach. The Art Show is an annual juried event and is consistently rated by “Sunshine Artist Magazine” in the Top 100 of North America’s best events.

Our relationship with Volusia County Schools has grown significantly over the past few years. It took a huge leap forward in the academic year 2022/2023 because of the creation of our newest Outreach program, Hub On the Run. This program featured Hub artists and art educators taking over the elementary school art classrooms of the 5 local schools and staying there long enough to bring a new art lesson and perspective to every child in each school. The kids and the art teachers loved it. We are planning a repeat for the next school year.

One of the teachers we supported was Krystal Freer from Edgewater Public. Krystal is a great teacher and she just recently hosted an end of year event for the grade-spanning group she calls her "Art Club." The Hub on Canal was pleased to provide the venue. This is actually the second year that Krystal has brought such an event to The Hub. We are thrilled to have her. The energy level inside The Hub is never higher or better than when groups of young people fill our spaces. Thank you Krystal.

IN MEMORIAM - Adele Aletti

It is with profound sadness that we notice the passing of our dear friend and longtime Hub volunteer Adele Aletti. She left us on Sunday, May 14, 2023.

Adele joined us as a volunteer near the time The Hub opened in 2012. She was a force of nature and never shied away from a tough task. She relished the less glamorous volunteer tasks. Adele loved to organize and clean out closets and storage spaces. God love her because nobody else wanted to do that! She came to be known as the Queen of Organization.

For many years Adele owned and managed the boutique Gone Bonkers on Flagler Avenue and for a time was the leader of the Flagler Avenue Business Association. She was well-liked and well-respected. We will miss you, Adele. Your Hub family salutes you and will always remember your indomitable spirit. Rest in Peace.
