Meet The WiDS Charlotte Speakers!
UNC Charlotte’s Data School of Data Science is hosting the fourth annual Women in Data Science Charlotte conference along with Lowe's Inc. on March 4 - 5, 2021! In response to the current COVID-19 guidelines on large face-to-face gatherings, the conference will be held virtually.

We are thrilled announce our speakers for the WiDS Charlotte Conference! We are excited to offer panel discussions, applied research presentations, interactive workshops and more.

WiDS Charlotte is free to attend and all genders are invited to witness outstanding women doing outstanding work!
Herschel and Cornelia Everett Foundation First-Year Graduate Fellowship
The Herschel and Cornelia Everett Foundation First-Year Graduate Fellowship was established in 2001 by the Everett family trust to support graduate education and foster growth at UNC Charlotte.

Award:

~ Master’s student: First year: $14,000 service-free stipend plus in-state tuition (not including fees); Second year: In-state tuition (not including fees). South Carolina residents are eligible for out-of-state tuition. Department must provide a qualifying graduate assistantship or fellowship in the academic program with a stipend of at least $14,000 Note: 6 hours with an assistantship is considered full-time enrollment and is required).

~ Doctoral student: First year: $18,500 service-free stipend plus in-state tuition (does not include fees); non-resident tuition (if required) and health insurance offered through the GASP program. Second-fifth year: In-state tuition (not including fees) non-resident tuition (if required) and health insurance offered through the GASP program. The department is expected to offer a qualifying graduate assistantship in the academic program with a stipend of at least $18,500. Note: 9 hours with an assistantship is considered full-time enrollment and is required).

Award requires nomination by the Graduate Program Director

Minimum Undergraduate GPA of 3.2 - 4.0.

Preference will be given to U.S. Citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

Preference to North Carolina or South Carolina residents.

Must be enrolled full-time.

WiDS Worldwide 4th Annual Datathon - Identifying Diabetes Condition to Provide Better Care for ICU Patients
When: Early January - February 2021

This year's datathon challenge will focus on models to determine whether a patient admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has been diagnosed with a particular type of diabetes.

How it works: The datathon will run from early January-February 2021 on Kaggle, an online community of data scientists.

Labeled training and validation sets will be provided for model development; you will then upload your classifications for an unlabeled test set to Kaggle and these will be used to determine the public leaderboard rankings and the winners of the competition.

Winners will be announced at the WiDS Worldwide Conference held virtually on March 8, 2021. Beyond the leaderboard rankings, individuals and teams will also have an opportunity to submit papers about their work to be eligible for an Excellence in Research Award from the National Science Foundation Big Data Innovation Hubs.

Who can participate: The datathon is open to individuals or teams of up to 4; at least half of each team must be women (people identifying as female). Participants can be students, faculty, government workers, members of NGOs, or industry members.

When: February 17th, 5:00 - 6:30 p.m.

The AWS Early Career Talent team is looking for current undergraduate and graduate students for internship and full-time opportunities in a variety of roles, including software development engineers (SDEs), support engineers, product managers, solution architects, technical writers, cloud consultants, cloud support associates, sales specialists, business analysts, and more.

Attend this session if you’re majoring in Information Technology, Computer Hardware Repair, Computer Information Systems, Telecommunication, HVAC/Electrician Studies, or a related field.

The School of Data Science has partnered with the Department of Social Work, Department of Global Studies and the Department of Philosophy to host a spring speaker series on data, technology and surveillance. 

Join us on February 23rd for a special panel discussion on an activists’ perspective on violence in a digital age.
Wednesday Seminar: Securing a Successful Internship
When: February 24, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

The internship is a critical requirement for both the HIA and DSBA master's degrees. The SDS has scheduled a special workshop to assist students in preparing for the internship, and to coach students in seeking and securing an internship.

2021 Tresata Virtual Career Fair
When: February 25, 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.

Tresata is hiring across all functions & levels of experience - including for their 2021 Summer Internship Program. Tresata's Q1 Virtual Career Fair will be an opportunity to get to know & ask questions to a panel of Tresata teammates.

These panelists will share insights into a 'day-in-the-life' for various roles, how they got to where they are today, and what we hire for.

AMMI Conference

Join Carolina Health Informatics Program’s (CHIP) virtual Analytics and Machine-Learning in Maternal-Health Intervention (AMMI) conference on April 15 – 16, 2021.

The AMMI conference will provide a unique and much-needed platform for multi-disciplinary researchers from maternal health, machine learning, informatics, and medical imaging on topics related to prenatal health.

This innovative virtual symposium will include keynote speakers, panel discussions, student poster sessions, and networking opportunities with the leading industry and academic researchers in machine learning and maternal health.
