What's New With SDS?

We hope this edition of the newsletter finds you all safe and well. October promises to be a busy month, and we have a full newsletter of special events and program announcements. If there is a theme to this month’s edition it is engagement. From advising sessions for next semester’s classes, to Wednesday Seminars, the upcoming Student Council events, there is no shortage of opportunities to connect with the on or off campus community.

Staff Updates

Welcome Lindsay Lennon, SDS Communications and Events Manager

We are pleased to announce the addition of Lindsay Lennon to the SDS team. She started this week and will take over communications, marketing for the School and academic programs as well as coordinating special events like the Women in Data Science and Analytics Frontiers conferences this spring. Prior to coming to UNC Charlotte Lindsay was a Program Manager for the Yale School of Management. She holds a BA in Marketing and Entrepreneurship form Central Connecticut State University.

Welcome Back to Carly Mahedy, SDS Director of Student Services

Carly Mahedy returned from maternity leave (Welcome to the world Fletcher Mahedy!) last week. We are excited to have her back supporting the SDS undergraduate and graduate programs!

Appreciation for Brenda Bradrick, Interim Adviser

Sincere thanks to Brenda Bradrick who stepped in while Carly was out of the office. Those of you who have had the opportunity to work with Brenda know that she brings a level of professionalism and commitment to her work that is not easily matched. She has been a tireless advocate for our students and the School. On behalf of the School we extend our heartfelt appreciation. Thank you Brenda!

Group Advising Sessions: DSBA & HIA

Spring Registration will begin on November 1. The School of Data Science will hold virtual advising sessions for Graduate students enrolled in the DSBA and HIAN programs on Monday, October 18th and 25th at 4:00 pm. Please attend one of the sessions.

Get involved in the Charlotte Data Science and Tech community!

We highly encourage our students to participate in the local community to embrace the dynamics of technology and entrepreneurship in Charlotte, the next technology hub of the East Coast. Because of that, we have been keeping a list of some of the most active groups in the Charlotte tech community on the Community Resources pages of our DSBA and HIA websites.

Joe is the Principal Recruiting Lead at Huntsource, a recruiting firm for data intelligence and analytics talent.

DegreeWorks Audit: On Track To Graduate?

DegreeWorks is a web-based planning tool that provides an accurate display of required coursework and helps students monitor their progress towards graduation. Students can access their real-time audit in DegreeWorks via my.uncc.edu and should routinely check their progress towards degree completion.

For any required courses that are in the Fall Through or Not Counted sections of DegreeWorks submit an Academic Petition that requests the courses be counted towards your program requirements.

If you believe your audit contains errors or the requirements do not match the catalog, students should contact:

SDS Bootcamps Fall 2021

SDS has three Boot Camps: Python, Statistics, and Introduction to R

All three of the current SDS boot camps (Python, Statistics, and Introduction to R) were reviewed this spring. Registration for the Fall Semester SDS Boot Camps is currently open. These training modules are open to all students actively enrolled in the DSBA or HIA programs. These online courses were created as a free resource for students. They are intended to be utilized as introductory or foundational review tools.

Students currently enrolled in the Fall 2021 sections must complete the bootcamp by Tuesday, December 7, 2021.

This event is geared towards students interested in informatics and is designed to show them how their education in Health Informatics can lead into exciting and fulfilling careers.This is a great way to ask personalized questions and learn more about the feature panelists and industry experts.

NCTech Career Fair - Tech Job Expo

Wednesday, October 20 | 8:30am - 1:30pm

The EXPO is a virtual event allowing job seekers and employers to connect live via chat and video. Job seekers can visit virtual booths to learn more about the participating employers. Employers customize a virtual booth with a corporate description, employee benefits/perks, social media links, job vacancies and more. You can view the list Booths, though check back often because employers just started registering. NC TECH will also offer informative webinars for candidates to learn more about navigating a virtual job expo and to meet certain employers.
