Creating a Work Environment Where Employees Thrive |
|
I do get excited about a good book, especially an inspiring leadership book...
Leadership has been a passion of mine for the past 45 years. I have had an opportunity to work at a high level in all forms of leadership capacities to include Human Resources for a 20-billion-dollar company. I have seen all kinds of leadership and management styles and it has fueled my passion for creating positive work cultures and developing good leaders. I know how important it is to create inclusive, inviting company cultures because it absolutely impacts the overall success of an organization. Employees who are treated well, developed, and recognized are engaged, happy and they stay! |
|
Today, so many businesses are struggling to attract and retain their employees, so I was excited to read the book People First: The 5 Steps to Pure Human Connection and a Thriving Organization. The authors, Three Carpenter and Jackie Carpenter provide a great resource for businesses today and give valuable and timely advice for organizations to prioritize their employees over everything else. They explain that when your workforce is invested in, valued, and appreciated, good things happen in your company and in turn to the clients you serve.
Developing leaders at every level of an organization is important because a company culture is made up of the people who work there! This book spoke my language about the need for clear communication, listening to employee wants and needs, creating a cohesive team culture and establishing a positive work environment where employees can learn, grow and give their best. In the long run, companies need to focus on their employees if they want to be a successful company. A unified team working in the same direction creates member/customer experiences that are unparallel. After 45 years, I still get all jazzed up just talking about it!

The Opportunity The General Manager is in charge of all Club operations and must be a very visible and accessible leader to both the members and staff alike. The General Manager will guide the Club under the direction of the Board of Directors. The General Manager will act as the leader, mentor and liaison between all department heads and committees. He or she will be held accountable for all areas of the Club and will enable the board to avoid the short-term focus, allowing the board to focus on proper governance. The Club seeks an experienced, strong, well-rounded leader with particular experience in membership marketing, food and beverage management, and club finance and budget management. This is an excellent opportunity for a club management professional willing to focus on an exceptional level of professional service, attention to and recognition of the Club’s loyal membership while providing leadership and guidance to its staff in order to achieve those goals.
Requirements - The oversight of the work of all department heads and managers. In coordination with department heads, the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision and timely evaluation of all of the Club’s staff. Compensation and benefits are to be administered consistently and must fall within the guidelines as mandated by the annual budget and Club policy.
- The General Manager will directly and through department heads emphasize a “member first” service culture that ensures member patronage and maximizes the use of the Club’s facilities.
- The active promotion of the Club to all members and their families. The General Manager is expected to interact with members on a daily basis, actively soliciting member opinions and input as to the Club’s facilities and services. Visibility and accessibility are paramount. The General Manager will respond to member complaints in a timely fashion and report significant issues to the President.
- The positive representation of the Club in the community, assisting as needed in the recruitment, orientation and retention of new and existing members.
- Financial guidance and reporting for all Club operations in accordance with acceptable accounting procedures. Such duties will involve the formulation of the annual operating and capital budgets to be coordinated with the Finance Committee, the Controller and department heads. The General Manager will operate the Club in accordance with the approved budgets and with the Controller report the financial condition to the Board of Directors on a monthly basis.
- Utilize a working knowledge of all facets of private club operations with an emphasis on food and beverage services, membership growth, social media presence, staff mentoring and the ability to drive member usage through program development.
- Demonstrate a reputation as an active and visible club leader, exhibiting a professional image and being responsive to member needs and feedback.

The Beatles were right: All you need is love. We have plenty of love in the private club business. Love for our clubs, our coworkers, vendors and certainly our members and their families. Throughout my career as a General Manager, I looked forward to working at my club each day. Now, I value the relationships I built through my club career and my CMAA associations. Today, being in the Executive Search business, I have recently observed a lack of love for many Food and Beverage Directors, Chefs, and even the General Managers they report to. I have never seen as much turnover “all-at-once” in the F&B departments of great clubs. |
