 SPECIAL ALERT

INGRAM BARGE COMPANY GIFTS $1,000,000 TO THE SEAMEN’S CHURCH INSTITUTE’S MINISTRY ON THE RIVER

Ingram Barge Company has made a $1 million gift to The Seamen’s Church Institute in support of its Ministry On The River campaign.

Founded in 1946 and headquartered in Nashville, TN, Ingram Barge Company—with a fleet of over 140 tow boats, 4000 barges, and 2000 workers—is among the largest inland-waterway commodity transportation companies in the United States. This gift symbolizes Ingram’s confidence and commitment to one of the Seamen’s Church Institute’s core initiatives, Ministry on the River, focusing on mariner support and crisis response along the length of America’s inland river system and Intracoastal waterways.

“Nothing is more important at Ingram Barge than the well-being of our associates,” said John D. Roberts, President and CEO of Ingram Marine Group. “And the Seamen’s Church Institute and the campaign to grow the Ministry on the River drives right to that foundation. When our associates need help, support, and care, our Seaman’s Church chaplains are there to provide just that. For us to participate in the growth of this wonderful support for our industry is an honor.”

“The Ingram Barge Company has been a tremendous supporter of SCI’s Ministry on the River program since its inception in 1997,” noted The Reverend Mark Nestlehutt, SCI President and Executive Director. “As SCI endeavors to raise $5 million to complete our Ministry on the River campaign, this transformative gift helps ensure that all mariners benefit from the services provided by SCI’s river chaplains. It will help expand our ability to respond more effectively to crises throughout the inland river system and Intracoastal waterway. This gift is yet another tangible example of Ingram’s solid commitment and concern for the welfare of U.S. mariners.”

SEAMEN'S CHURCH INSTITUTE-PADUCAH WELCOMES CAPTAIN JACOB HORMAN

The Seamen’s Church Institute welcomes our new Center for Maritime Education Paducah-based Simulator Instructor, Captain Jacob Horman. Jacob was born and raised in the Metropolis, Illinois, area. He started his career in the river industry in 2009 at the Olmsted Dam project, where he eventually earned his pilot’s license. Jacob has experience working for ACBL, Tennessee Valley Towing, Marquette, and was most recently employed by CGB Waterfront Services in Cairo, IL, as a Fleet Captain conducting fleeting operations and linehaul work on the Ohio, Cumberland, and Tennessee rivers. Glad to have you aboard, Jacob.

US 60 CUMBERLAND RIVER BRIDGE REPLACEMENT–PROJECT UPDATE

In 2017, SCI's Center for Maritime Education was asked by Stantec Consulting Services to test the feasibility of a new bridge across the Cumberland River along US Route 60 near Smithland, Kentucky. SCI's testing and simulations revealed that the bridge wasn't going to work as the original design intended. Our data helped engineers determine that piers would need to be built on land, saving several months of redesign work.

Six years later, the bridge structure was floated down from Paducah to Smithland, where it will be lifted onto the bridge piers. See our 2017 Case Study and Stantec’s project page for more information.

The Reverend Kempton Baldridge joined SUNY-Maritime Cadets at INDOC

This August, The Reverend Kempton Baldridge briefly stepped back into his role as SCI Chaplain, spending a week advising and supporting MUGs (Mariners Under Guidance) as they faced the challenges of INDOC at State University of New York Maritime College. The Reverend Baldridge is no stranger to working with cadets; before his retirement from SCI last year, he had joined SUNY’s TS Empire State crew during the Summer Sea Term in 2021.

SCI NEWS BRIEFS

 FROM THE SCI ARCHIVES

ON THIS DATE...

Now that New York has caught up with Houston and Paducah with students returning to school, it's time to work on our communication skills—whether signal flag, Morse code, or semaphore. The latter was especially important as SCI's School of Navigation expanded rapidly in response to the war effort in 1917. The Lookout was full of references to wigwagging and calls for SCI's friends to donate signal flags.
Students practiced on educational cruises aboard steam launch J. Hooker Hamersley and at SCI's flying bridge atop 25 South Street, where winds banking off the skyscrapers added to the challenge. (Photos below are from midcentury.)
