We are amazed by (1) a Guinness Book grandmother and (2) Max Linsky's special podcast tailored to seniors.
Our weight-lifting grandma, Edith Murway-Traina from Florida, at age 98 entered the 2019 Guinness Book of World Records as the “oldest female competitive powerlifter.” She was able to deadlift 74kg (163 pounds) and bench press 29kg (about 64 pounds) – more than many women half her age could manage.
Edith’s powerlifting journey began at the age of 91 when she joined her local gym on the suggestion of a long-time friend. Edith, a former professional dancer, started first to pick up a few bars after watching “those ladies doing their thing” to be part of the team, then later started to take the sport seriously with the help of a trainer. In her interview by Robyn Lucas in YOU of News24.com, she stated that “As a performer and a dancer, applause was always a very important part of my enjoyment. I was happier each time I got more and more applause. ”
She started competing in 2013, has competed in 14 competitions and won nine of those events. The pandemic has slowed down her competition. She is preparing for her next powerlifting competition which should take place in this month (November).
