The Mississippi School Boards Association is currently conducting the Superintendent Search for the Jackson County School District.


The Jackson County School District is seeking an innovative and data-driven educational leader who has a proven record of raising student achievement, who has current, hands-on experience with the Mississippi accountability system, and who has demonstrated the ability to develop positive relationships with all stakeholder groups.

ABOUT THE DISTRICT


The Jackson County School District is an “A” rated district and known for its amazing school culture and positive atmosphere. JCSD strives for excellence in education and believes in putting students first. The district welcomes new families and establishes strong relationships between home and school.


JCSD serves 9,000+ students and has a graduation rate of 91%. There are 14 schools in the district with a student to teacher ratio of 15:1. JCSD provides advanced placement programs, fine arts offerings, and award-winning extracurricular activities. The district continues to grow with new construction and upgrades to schools and athletic facilities. 


JCSD provides a FABLAB to serve all of Jackson County. The FABLAB consists of a suite of digital fabrication and rapid prototyping machines, including a 3D printer, laser engraver, and an electronics workbench. This equipment allows students to use computer-aided design to create almost anything they can imagine! 


The Jackson County Technology Center provides students with a creative and comfortable atmosphere for learning. The district holds a national certification in Career and Technical Education.


ABOUT THE COMMUNITY


The Jackson County School District is located in Vancleave, Mississippi, near the beautiful Gulf Coast. Millions of visitors are drawn to the area for the white sandy beaches, aquamarine waters, boating, golfing, camping, and historical sites. 


Jackson County is known for its small-town feel and overall neighborly atmosphere. The district is made up of three attendance centers: East Central, Vancleave, and St. Martin which serve the communities of Hurley, Wade, Big Point, Vestry, Latimer, Vancleave, St. Martin, and Ocean Springs. 


Jackson County is home to amazing art galleries, including the famous Walter Anderson Museum of Art. The local cuisine is world famous for its fresh seafood dishes, local barbeque, and unique restaurants. Outdoor adventures include fishing, sporting events, live entertainment arenas, and historic sites to tour and enjoy. 

Applicant Criteria & Qualifications
The Superintendent of Education serves as the chief executive officer of the school district and is responsible to the Board of Trustees for ensuring compliance with all board policies and Mississippi State Board of Education rules and regulations, as well as state and federal laws.

Only applicants who fit the following criteria and qualifications defined by the board will be considered for the position.

  • Must meet criteria outlined in MS Code 37-9-13.

QUALIFICATIONS DEFINED BY THE BOARD
  • Evidence of a recent documented track record of raising the achievement level of all students
  • A minimum of three years of experience in an “A” or “B” level district or experience in moving a school or district to a “A” or “B” level; having served as a principal preferred  
  • Has experience working with diverse populations
  • Skill as an effective communicator, including speaking, listening, writing, and technology
  • Ability to develop a climate of trust/openness with all stakeholders
  • Willingness to maintain an open-door policy with all stakeholder groups to benefit students and the district
  • Ability to develop a formal process for communicating with all stakeholders, including the board members
  • Has experience with successful consensus building
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems
  • Willingness to and ability to work cooperatively with the school board members and to keep them informed
  • Ability to develop a positive rapport, while providing strong leadership to administrators, teachers, and other school personnel
  • Uses a team-management approach
  • Knowledge of strategic planning, including development, implementation, monitoring, and reporting
  • Experience with MS laws related to curriculum and instruction, special education, human resources, operations, and finances
  • Evidence of decision-making focused on student outcomes, students, needs, and student well-being
  • Has successful experience in school finance to include budgeting, financial decision-making, monitoring, and reporting
  • Ability to recruit, retain, and invest in the development of highly qualified personnel
  • Has experience in developing a climate of high expectations and accountability
  • Has a strong commitment to pursue academic innovations for all grade levels
  • Is honest and transparent; has highest moral and ethical standards of conduct; has a strong work ethic
  • Is committed to becoming an active and visible member of the community
