Conference Opportunities - Share Your Interest

Conference season has arrived, which provides a great opportunity to inform our collective goals. We are seeking all those interested in representing ARC to advance our institutional knowledge and exchange ideas with the higher education community. We identified a few conferences and secured funding to support team attendance. There will be limited spots per identified conference due to funding, so attendee selection will focus on cross-constituency teams. We recognize the conferences do not reflect all areas of interest, so the interest form provides a space for you to share a conference or training you believe has the potential to advance our collective efforts.

Click the button below to share your interests. The deadline to submit is February 4.

Truth, History and the 1619 Project

You’re invited to join us for “A Conversation About the Importance of Truth, History and the 1619 Project” with Nikole Hannah-Jones on Wednesday, January 26 from noon to 1:30 pm via Zoom. The 1619 Project aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.

Nikole Hannah-Jones (pictured here) is the Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of the 1619 Project and a staff writer at The New York Times Magazine. She has spent her career investigating racial inequality and injustice, and her reporting has earned her the MacArthur Fellowship, also known as the Genius Grant, a Peabody Award, two George Polk Awards, and three National Magazine Awards.

Racial Justice Book Circle

Join FLC's Spring 2022 Racial Justice Book Circle as we read and discuss Bettina Love’s book, We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom. Drawing on personal stories, research, and historical events, Love, an esteemed educator in urban schools, offers a vision of educational justice inspired by the rebellious spirit and methods of abolitionists. Following in the tradition of activists like Ella Baker, Bayard Rustin, and Fannie Lou Hamer, We Want to Do More Than Survive introduces an alternative to traditional modes of educational reform and expands our ideas of civic engagement and intersectional justice.

To accompany the book read, join your colleagues on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 1:00 pm via Zoom, starting Wednesday, February 9, to review and discuss the concepts addressed. RSVP now. We also encourage you to support BIPOC-owned businesses and authors by shopping at these local Black-owned bookstores - All Things Literacy and Underground Books. We hope you will join us as we continue our district's commitment to cultivating a culture of anti-racism on our campuses.
