Pathway to Medical School

Are you interested in becoming a medical doctor? Avenue M provides an opportunity for up to 50 students from our local colleges and districts to be selected as pre-med school candidates. This program provides a supported pathway through UC Davis, CSU Sacramento, or Cal Poly Humbolt to the completion of a pre-med degree. Those who complete the program earn priority consideration for UC Davis Med School.

The goal of the program is to support underrepresented populations by providing an avenue to and through UC Davis Med School. This is an exciting opportunity and will provide much-needed healthcare and doctors to regions of California where underserved populations live and where doctors are greatly needed.

The upcoming AvenueM Info Session with a walkthrough of the application process and a live Q&A will be Monday, October 24 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Please register in advance.

If you can’t attend the upcoming session, you can register to view a previous recording of an information session.

Deadlines:

Deadline to Apply for Fall consideration is October 31, 2022.

Deadline to Apply for Spring consideration is March 31, 2023.

Student Emergency Grants

We know that life is unexpected and you may experience a sudden and unexpected emergency that threatens your ability to continue your education, that’s where the Los Rios Colleges Foundation’s Student Emergency Fund can help! The Student Emergency Fund provides grants of up to $1,000 with no repayment obligation. Visit the Student Emergency Fund webpage for eligibility requirements and to apply.

Eligible students will receive these grants through BankMobile, so please make sure that your BankMobile account is set up.

Here is how the Emergency Grant has helped students continue their education:

“Thank you to all who helped grant me this financial help. It was very stressful to find that something like this happened to me despite me planning ahead with my counselor, and now I feel so much relief. I appreciate your consideration so that now I am able to finish my summer classes and apply to Monterey in August!”

“I started my studies while I was homeless. During this time, I was able to get out of homelessness and focus on rebuilding my life. It will help me continue to get the essentials that I need to continue to be successful in my career in Cybersecurity.”

Beaver Cares Update

ARC’s Beavers Cares program offers a wide variety of services and supports for students. Here are some updates.

  • Beaver Cares now offers on-campus CalFresh Application Assistance with the River City Food Bank on the second Tuesday and fourth Thursday of each month. Students can email arcbeavercares@arc.losrios.edu to schedule an appointment.
  • The gas card application is live on the Beaver Cares website. Students may apply to receive one $50 gas card each semester. Qualifications include current enrollment in courses at ARC and a brief explanation of their financial need on the application.
  • The 2nd 8-week courses textbook assistance application is now open. Students may find the application on the website.
  • Even though it is 90 degrees outside now, winter is coming. Beaver Cares purchased 300 backpacks to help support our homeless students. Each backpack contains a blanket, gloves, a hat, socks, a rain poncho, toiletry items, and more. Students who identify as homeless will be offered a free backpack. Email arcbeavercares@arc.losrios.edu for more information.

These are only a few of the services offered by Beaver Cares - visit the program website for more information.

Share the Stars

Do you enjoy working with people, learning new things, and sharing that knowledge with others? Do you have a passion for astronomy? If so, consider applying to become a docent for the Community Observatory located at Folsom Lake College’s El Dorado Center in Placerville. Docents are volunteers of all ages who serve as guides to Observatory visitors and share information on the telescopes, the universe, deep space objects, stars, and planets.

The Community Observatory will train and mentor docents through their learning period by having them shadow experienced docents. Docents are then required to volunteer a minimum of two nights a month (the Observatory is open Friday/Saturday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 pm in Fall/Winter, and from 9:00 to 11:00 pm in Late Spring/Summer). To apply, complete the downloadable application and email it to Carissa Lombardi at clombardi@edcoe.org.
