Theatre Students Win at Regional Competition

ARC students recently won big at a regional theatre arts competition, taking home the top three acting/singing prizes at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Region 7 Festival!

Doshima Iyorlu (left in the photo) finished first in the Musical Theatre Initiative category and also won the prestigious Irene Ryan Acting Competition Best Actor award. Alexandria Wilson won the Irene Ryan Acting Competition Best Partner honor. In addition, Kimberlee Wilson won the Society of Properties Artisan Managers Award.

This Kennedy Center competition featured the top theatre arts students in the 9-state Region 7, including students from 4-year and graduate programs. Doshima and Alexandria will now compete at the Kennedy Center's national level. Doshima has also been awarded a scholarship to participate in an amazing week-long professional-level experience with Broadway directors, choreographers, and actors with the Open Jar Institute.
Emory Douglas Friday, March 11
Emory Douglas - Revolutionary Artist at ARC

ARC welcomes American graphic artist and designer Emory Douglas on Friday, March 11, at 1:00 pm in Raef Hall 160. Douglas was the Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party from 1967 to the 1980s, creating some of the most iconographic art of the time. His work was recently featured at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in an exhibition titled "Emory Douglas: Art and Revolution." This one-hour event with Q&A following is free of charge. Vaccines are required and masks must be worn the entire time.

Women's History Month - Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope
Women in Film

Join CRC Professors Diana Reed and Lauren Wagner for “Women in Film: Agents of Hope and Healing” on Thursday, March 10, from 1:00 to 2:20 pm via Zoom. This presentation celebrating Women’s History Month will include a screening and discussion of various depictions of women in films as agents of hope and healing. After watching each film segment, we will analyze the intention of the filmmaker, consider the historical accuracy of the content, and share the clip's impact on us as viewers. Click the button below to see other Women's History Month events.
Immigration Town Hall March 8

Los Rios’ Refugee Career Pathways welcomes the International Rescue Committee Immigration Team who will hold a town hall/clinic and discussion about immigration on Tuesday, March 8 at 4:00 pm via Zoom. All who are interested in immigration resources for themselves or their families are welcome to come and ask questions. Please register for the event in advance.
A Quartet of Great Music Events

The ARC Music Department will be hosting a quartet of great music events on campus this month, all in the ARC main theatre.

The ARC Instrumental Jazz Ensembles present A Tribute to Count Basie’s 1959 “Chairman of the Board” album featuring arrangements by Frank Foster, Ernie Wilkins, and Thad Jones on Thursday, March 10, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. More info and tickets.

The ARC Symphonic Band presents an evening of great music from composers Gustav Holst, Samuel Hazo, and Pascual Marquina on Tuesday, March 15, at 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Tickets are $8. More info and tickets.

The award-winning ARC Vocal Jazz Ensembles will feature select soloists and special guest Natomas Charter School Vocal Ensemble at a live concert on Wednesday, March 16, from 8:00 to 10:00 pm. More info and tickets.

The ARC Concert Choir and choirs from Antelope High School, Granite Bay High School, and John Adams Academy will participate in a workshop and concert on Friday, March 18, at 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Admission is free - donations are welcome.
Help for Ukraine

This is a brief list of resources for those affected by the situation in Ukraine as well as opportunities to give.

If students need to talk to someone for help as they go through this difficult situation, they can reach out to Los Rios Mental Health & Wellness Services, the ARC Counseling Office, or TimelyCare telehealth 24/7 services. Employees are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider or the District's Employee Assistance Program.
 
The Los Rios Refugee Career Pathways program assists refugees/SIV/asylees and can connect people with campus and community resources.

Students in need of items like food or clothing should contact the Beaver Cares program.

Another resource: the ARC Club and Events Board has chartered the English Language Learner and Immigrant Support (ELLIS) student organization, advised by Erik Haarala: haarale@arc.losrios.edu

If you would like to make a charitable donation, the State Chancellor’s Office has provided this list of resources:
  • UNICEF supports health, nutrition, education, safe drinking water, sanitation and protection for children and families caught in the conflict in Ukraine.
  • Médecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders runs a range of activities in Ukraine working with local volunteers, organizations, health care professionals and authorities to help people travel to health care facilities and access prescribed medications.
  • Voices of Children - The Ukrainian organization's Charitable Foundation helps provide psychological and psychosocial support to children affected by the armed conflict, according to its website.
  • Sunflower of Peace is raising money to prepare first aid medical tactical backpacks for paramedics and doctors on the front lines.
  • International Committee of the Red Cross - The Switzerland-based organization is aiming to help people affected by the conflict and support the work of the Ukrainian Red Cross.
  • Save the Children, based in London, helps to deliver lifesaving aid to vulnerable children in Ukraine and around the world.
  • CARE is raising money for its Ukraine Crisis Fund, which will provide immediate aid including food, water, hygiene kits, support services and direct cash assistance.
  • The International Rescue Committee helps those impacted by humanitarian crises, including Europe and the Americas. The IRC is on the ground in Poland and working to help displaced families.
  • Razom for Ukraine was founded in 2014 and has since launched efforts to build a stronger democracy. Now, the nonprofit is “focused on purchasing medical supplies for critical situations like blood loss and other tactical medicine items.
