Get Ready for Finals

Finals are just around the corner, Beavers! The last day of regular instruction is Thursday, December 9. Final exams will be held Friday, December 10 through Thursday, December 16. View the final exam schedule and check with your instructors to confirm your exam day/time.

We’ve also put together a list of tips to help you get ready for your finals and take your exams:

Pre-Test
  • Access tutoring support
  • Set up a virtual or in-person study session with fellow students in your class
  • Have a final paper or project with a lot of writing? Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) can help!
  • Get research assistance from the Librarians
  • Be prepared – study your class materials and class notes
  • If available, take a practice exam
  • Gather all the supplies/materials you’ll need to take the test
  • Your physical and mental health is also important. Don’t forget that as a student, you have access to TimelyCare with 24/7 mental and medical virtual care.

Taking an Online Test
  • Find a quiet test-taking spot with minimal distractions
  • Check your computer and make sure the location has adequate internet. Technical problems? Don’t panic. Contact your instructor immediately detailing the exact problem.
  • Once you’re logged in, take a deep breath, relax, and focus
  • Don’t leave the test webpage – you may lose your work
  • Plan your allotted time – keep your eye on the clock and set an alarm if needed
  • Give yourself time to check your work and don’t forget to click "submit"

Taking an In-Person Exam
  • Once you’re taken your seat, take a deep breath, relax, and focus
  • Get out all of the materials you will need – including blue books, scantrons, extra pens, etc.
  • Plan your allotted time and keep your eye on the clock
  • Give yourself time to check your work

Best of luck on your final exams – you've got this!
And remember, Winter Recess is almost here.

Important Information that can help your through the enrollment process:
Stay Healthy This Winter
The cold and flu season is upon us! Whether you think you might have influenza (flu), COVID-19, or simply a cold, any of these contagious illnesses can be transmitted to others, so stay home and get better before returning to campus. Do your part to keep our colleges healthy and safe!

Is it the Flu or COVID-19?
Influenza and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different viruses. COVID-19 seems to spread more easily than the flu and causes more serious illnesses in some people. It can also take longer before people show symptoms, and people can be contagious for longer. Because some of the symptoms of flu and COVID-19 are similar, it may be hard to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone, and testing may be needed to help confirm a diagnosis. Free on-campus COVID-19 testing is currently available to all Los Rios students and employees through StemExpress (must provide your WID#) – schedule a testing appointment.

Self-Check for Symptoms
Before coming to campus (note: you must meet the vaccine requirement or have an approved medical or religious exemption), please do a self-check each day. If you are sick or are experiencing any of the following symptoms, then please stay home and notify your instructor.
Possible symptoms include:
  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Get Your Flu Vaccine
Flu vaccination can keep you from getting sick and can also reduce the risk of flu-associated hospitalization. In addition, flu vaccination is an important preventive tool for people with chronic health conditions. You can get your annual flu shot now through your healthcare provider or locations like CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Save Mart, Safeway, Costco, and Rite Aid. Inform the pharmacy at these businesses of your health insurance coverage as health insurance may cover part or all of the fee. For more information on flu and COVID-19 vaccination locations and to make an appointment, go to California’s My Turn website.

Handwashing Helps!
This week is also National Handwashing Awareness Week. Practicing good hand hygiene is a simple yet effective way to prevent infections. Keeping your hands clean is especially important to help prevent viruses from spreading. View handwashing tips.

Congrats to ARC adjunct English professor Nathan McQueen (pen name N.T. McQueen) who has had his new novel, The Blood of Bones, published!

The Blood of Bones is a mythic, coming-of-age tale that speaks to the struggle of finding one's identity against the expectations of where we come from. A visceral journey of violence and redemption and based on actual, current practices among tribes in Ethiopia's Omo Valley, this novel will bring you into a new world hidden from time.
