Get Your Semester Off to a Great Start
The Fall 2021 semester officially begins Saturday, August 21. Some instructors may start their classes on Saturday, while some will start on Monday, August 23. Regularly check Canvas starting Saturday to see when your class is live/published. Don’t see your class? To view unpublished classes, click on the “Courses” icon and select “All Courses”.
Good luck this semester!
Vaccine Requirement
To support the health and safety of students and all members of our community, the Los Rios Community College District will be implementing a COVID-19 vaccine requirement for all employees and all students who access district and college facilities, including those at American River College.

  • All employees and all students accessing our facilities (including in-person classes, student services, or any other indoor on-campus activity) will need to provide evidence of their first vaccine dose by October 1, 2021.
  • Consistent with all applicable law, exceptions will be granted for eligible documented medical conditions as well as narrowly defined and sincerely held religious beliefs.

There are many specific details that still need to be worked out, including the method we will be using to gather and track vaccination status, which will allow people to securely upload an image of their official vaccination verification (e.g. "COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card" or a digital copy of your COVID-19 vaccination record from Digital COVID-19 Vaccine Record).

Continue to check your email for more information in these important areas; we will be providing additional details and next steps in the days and weeks ahead. You can also find any new or updated information on our reopening website.

In the meantime, if you have not yet been vaccinated, now is the time to protect yourself, your family, and your college and community from this deadly disease. Vaccinations are free, safe, and effective, and are the most important thing we can do to help end this pandemic.
Parking Update for Fall Semester
We will not be selling semester or daily parking permits for Fall 2021. This means you will not be ticketed for a lack of permit during the semester. Be sure to follow all other parking rules, such as only parking in handicapped spots if you have the appropriately issued placard and no parking in fire or loading zones, as violations of these could result in a ticket.
student shopping for textbooks
Get Your Textbooks
Start by looking up your textbooks by course section on the bookstore website. Free curbside pickup is available! Select the free curbside pickup option when checking out online. You’ll receive an email letting you know when your items are available for pickup and what to do when you arrive. If you don’t need your textbooks right away, select free shipping when checking out. Your items will typically arrive within 4-7 days. Expedited shipping is also available for an additional cost. Need to pay with cash? Please call the bookstore to make an appointment.

NOTE: Monday, August 30 is the deadline to return textbooks or class materials to the bookstore and receive a refund (as long as the product is in its original condition). Purchases made from August 30 on will have a two-business day return policy.
Know Your Schedule
Some classes meet weekly online at specific days and times, while others don't and will be self-paced. Check your schedule in eServices to make sure you know which of your classes meet up and put it on your calendar so you don't forget! If no days/times are listed or you see “TBD” or “1 AM - 1 AM”, that means there is no required weekly meeting for that class. Even if you don’t have a set meeting time, plan to check Canvas each week and set aside time to do your regular coursework. Some classes meet in person on campus - check your schedule for the day, time, and meeting location.
Waitlists
Are you on a waitlist? The waitlist status of a class changes throughout the enrollment period, so you should regularly monitor your waitlist status. If your professor gives you a permission number to add the class, follow these Use Permission Number/Enroll from Waitlist instructions for eServices.
Get Started with Canvas
Online and even many of our in-person classes use the Canvas learning system. If you are new to Canvas, check out these short Los Rios Canvas "how to" videos on the most requested features.

Tips for Online Classes
Since online classes don’t require you to meet in person, it can be easy to underestimate how much work they require. Avoid over-scheduling, know the expectations, and actively participate.

If you have a class that meets at specific days and times on Zoom, make sure to know your schedule and follow it. Log onto Zoom a little early so you’re not scrambling at the last minute.

Regularly check your email, Canvas online class portal, and communicate with your instructor and use the resources they provide.

Manage your time wisely and be aware of deadlines. Limit your social media use. Get online tutoring help early on and especially if you’re falling behind.
Create structure and routine with a regular study space that is comfortable and has minimal distractions.
Virtual and In-Person Student Support Services
We have modified our student services to support you in an online/remote environment. You can access online tutoring, use the "Ask a Librarian" feature 24/7, meet with a member of the Financial Aid office, and so much more. Explore available remote resources at American River College.

Limited support services will also be available in-person; learn more at Student Services reopening.
