Student Wins All-USA Academic Honors
ARC student Brianna Huynh has been selected as a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society's 2022 All-USA Academic Team. Only 20 students nationwide were selected for this prestigious honor. Students were chosen based on their outstanding intellectual achievement, leadership, and community and campus engagement. Brianna is ASB Director of Finance, Phi Theta Kappa President, Women in STEM Treasurer, Pacific Islander Southeast Asian Club President, SSCCC STEM Caucus Vice-Chair, Design Hub intern, Beacon Tutor, MESA student, and a member of the track team. That's not all - Brianna was also named a Phi Theta Kappa 2022 New Century Transfer Pathway Scholar and will receive a $2,250 scholarship. Selection was based on the score earned in the All-USA Academic Team competition, for which more than 2,000 applications were received this year. Nominations were evaluated on academic achievement, leadership, service, and significant endeavors. Brianna received the highest score in California.

Student Hold Space Event on March 21

Please share this with students:

Safe spaces are spaces reserved for individuals to come together and discuss their experiences in a safe, respectful, and supportive environment. ARC would like to "Hold Space" for our students impacted by racism. The Hold Space event will be held on Monday, March 21 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on Zoom. Our goal is to support each person in working through their unique situations, circumstances, and emotions.

Develop Healthy Habits

March is National Nutrition Month, a month-long nutrition education and information campaign focusing on the importance of making informed food choices and developing healthy eating and physical activity habits. This year’s theme is “Celebrate a World of Flavors.”

One person dies every 36 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease and approximately 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year. Physical inactivity and unhealthy dietary habits have the greatest impact on your weight and can significantly impact your future health. Some healthy eating barriers include time constraints, unhealthy snacking, convenience of high-calorie foods, stress, higher price of healthy foods, and ease of accessibility to junk food.

Here are some quick tips to get you started on a healthier path:
  • Plan your meals and snacks for the week
  • Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go
  • Check out menus online in advance so you can make more healthful food and drink choices when away from home
  • Try new flavors and foods from around the world
  • Park farther out to get more steps in
  • Catch up with a friend or family member over a walk
In Memoriam

We are saddened to share the recent passing of former ARC Counselor Sigrid Menard, who served the college for over 20 years. She retired in 2019. Please see Sigrid’s obituary for more information.
TherActivist: They Them Theirs Film and Discussion

All are invited to a discussion with Dana TherActivist Johnson, MSW, author and filmmaker of the memoir, TherActivist: They/Them/Theirs, and Khalid White about how to take on a “therapeutic activist” approach while serving and empowering people of color, LGBTQ+ communities, and marginalized populations. The Zoom event takes place Thursday, March 24, from 1:00 to 2:30 pm. TherActivist: They/Them/Theirs shines a light on the intersections of identity, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, as well as gender expression and social activism against the backdrop of racism, anti-LGBTQ+ violence, and social exclusion. Register in advance for this event.
Global Makers Event
The Global Makers series continues with the next event featuring Sharon Clausson, inventor of the Copenhagen Solar Cooker, on Wednesday, March 23, at 9:00 am. This series is a collaboration between the SCC Global Studies Program, SCC Makerspace, and our grassroots partner, Solar Education Project. The series will feature Global Makers of solar cookers and dehydrators to learn about their creative responses to environmental crises, economic scarcity, gender oppression, and global inequity, while exploring the meaning of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). There will be a giveaway of a Copenhagen Solar Cooker to a student in attendance. Please register in advance.
