SFPS adds college to career-technical focus

SFPS has shifted to include college in its focus on career and technical education pathways, which prepare students for the world of work and traditionally introduce them to workplace knowledge, skills and abilities through hands-on experiences. SFPS' pathways are now referred to as College and Career Technical Education or CCTE.
Deputy Superintendent Vanessa Romero announced the shift at the SFPS Board of Education's study session on September 23rd.
"We want kids to have opportunities to explore industry and two-year and four-year colleges," said Ms. Romero.
Peter McWain, SFPS' director of curriculum and instruction, said, "SFPS has a phenomenal foundation from which to build."
Under a plan to strengthen and support CCTE, SFPS will continue to build on career pathways that make secondary education more engaging and relevant, bring the classroom into the community through work-based learning like job shadowing, mentorships and internships. and expand dual credit opportunities that are aligned to pathways.
SFPS' pathways are aligned to more than 25 certificate and degree programs at our four postsecondary institution partners (Eastern New Mexico University, Institute of American Indian Arts, San Juan College and Santa Fe Community College).
Current CCTE offerings prepare students for more than 52 separate industry-recognized certifications. In terms of work study, job shadowing, mentorships and internships, SFPS has planned capacity for 212 students to be supported by more than 31 local business partners.
Board President Kate I. Noble said, "This starts to knit a lot of things together."

Let's turn the table on damaging TikTok challenges!

Damage to school bathrooms occurred across the country in September due to a TikTok challenge. More challenges on TikTok have been issued. SFPS General Counsel Joshua Granata suggests turning the table on these negative calls to action and challenging students to spread kindness, help the community or inspire others by their actions.
We encourage you to visit with your child about ways to further kindness at home, school or beyond. We also welcome your thoughts on a Superintendent's Challenge to change our community, one action at a time. Send your ideas to Cody Dynarski, public information officer, at [email protected].
