Expectations. They are everywhere. Expectations to be at work on time. Expectations for our children to pick up their toys or make it home by curfew. Expectations to achieve a certain weight, physique, or level of health. Expectations are just a part of our lives whether put in place by others or by ourselves. |

In the world of education, school specifically, expectations are not just present but a key component of how we organize our schools and classrooms, teach content, and transition students from one year to the next then, eventually, to graduation. Passion Fueled Ms. Washington's Career and Return |

Fairfield Career Center Assistant Director, Eastland-Fairfield program completer, and Groveport-Madison graduate, Ms. Dakia Washington, shares a glimpse of her journey through EFCTS, into a path that led her into school administration, and back to the district that started it all. Her passion can be felt and should make us all feel good that she is helping to lead our young people to follow their own. |

A look inside the Employability Prep Program |

Last week, some of the students in the Eastland-Fairfield Employability Prep program shared with us their customized experiences, which are giving them opportunities to learn, grow, and gain experience inside a variety of workplace environments around the Columbus area. Our tour took us through the kitchen and laundry room of Sonesta Columbus, the playrooms of City Kids Daycare Downtown, and throughout the facility at Muetzel Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. |

Our first stop took us to the Sonesta Columbus hotel where Allana Pedersen (Whitehall) showed us how she keeps the kitchen clean and in order, key for serving the high volume of customers that pass through the Vine & Forge diner. She, and all of our students, are not just performing important jobs but also acquiring confidence, regulating schedules, gaining soft employability skills, and building important relationships with their co-workers and supervisors. Employability Prep offers students with learning differences (ages 16-21) the opportunity for placement into a variety of community job sites. The program has a strong history of supporting students while in the program and beyond, and even connecting them with potential future employers. Thank you to all of our partners that welcome our students and offer them opportunities to grow and brighten their futures.

On our last stop we interrupted Michael Burton (Groveport) in his work day at Muetzel, but he was kind enough to show us throughout the facility, the stock room, and around the property where he was completing his daily tasks. |

|
FCC Students Undergo Impactful Research Project |
|
The students taking Ms. Levacy's social studies class at Fairfield Career Center engaged in a very impactful research project that shed light on the darkness that was The Holocaust. Students used archival footage and photographs to learn about Jewish life in Europe before World War II. First, they used the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to choose moving, personal photos from their media sources on pre-war Jewish life, captioned those photos, and provided additional context. They then evaluated their classmates' photos and were able to see that the lives of Jewish people from war-torn Europe before the global conflict had similarities to their day-to-day lives. This allowed students to see the catastrophic impact of the Holocaust on the people and their lives. |

Leah Ely ‘15 (Gahanna Lincoln), pictured left, is currently an admissions counselor at the University of Findlay. She stopped by to say hi and plug the amazing Veterinarian and Health programs at UF. Leah majored in Western Equine Studies and is now pursuing her MBA. |

Catherine Moses ‘14 (Gahanna Lincoln) talked to us about the Ohio State University Medical lab science program. Cat recently received her master's degree in pharmaceutical science and is applying to Ph.D. programs for pharmaceutical science and research.

Mr. Jeff Cashin’s physics class at Eastland Career Center explored the basic physics of bridges by experimenting with different shapes to understand which are the most structurally strong. We love the practical application of this physics project to a real-world context!

Students at Fairfield Career Center now have the opportunity to participate in a Wellness Wednesday program monthly with our Exercise Science instructor, Stacy Valentas! This program will offer a 10-minute stretching session followed by five minutes of guided relaxation. Thank you, Mrs. Valentas, for your focus on our students’ health and mindfulness!
