MARY ROSE YOUNG NEWSLETTER August 2022
The Outrageous
Mary Rose is to appear on TV again! Her home was selected by the makers of a new Channel 4 show called Outrageous Homes, and the film crew visited last week. The star of the show Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen previewed the style of the show thus: “Huzzah! At last, a property show that turns its back on Delusions of Blandeur and instead celebrates homes that take OTT to another level of FABULOUS. In fact, we’ll be filming in spaces of such OUTRAGEOUSNESS I’ll be the most understated thing on screen which is, let’s face it, an extraordinary achievement…” Mr Bowen really is quite a character and it was great to have him in residence all day…here are a couple of shots. Of course he was not in fact the most understated thing on show, but I wore a very colourful Hawaiian shirt and Mary Rose’s pink stripy get up left his Mississippi Gambler Outfit looking somewhat in the shade. After meeting them all I’m really looking forward to seeing the piece, their enthusiasm will make it great, we shall announce its airing in this newsletter.
Giant Punch Bowl Mark II
The Giant Punch Bowl and accompanying goblets showed in the last newsletter have already been superseded. This is the second version made for Duce in Destin and it’s worth seeing because the décor gives it a different dimension. While the first one was designed for sheer opulence, this one is more considered and the design perhaps works in harmony with the shape a little more, while the studded roses seem to have woken up and started growing. See more here
Tpot The Dog
Another tragic pet death results in an email to Mary Rose Young. This little dog with its trademark tongue on show was called “Tpot” and his death prompted a friend of his owner to commission this charming little pot from Mary Rose. Only when it was payment time did I find out that the guy who ordered it used to work in a shop in Bath, right next door to the Mary Rose Young shop run by our late mother. He, we will call him Chris for anonymity, was a close friend of our mother’s and he went on to tell me he is writing a novel and has based one of his characters entirely upon HER. How wonderful is that? When he has finished this mouthwatering tale I shall make a newsletter announcement. Meanwhile I know very little about Tpot the dog except that there was some Shihtzu in him, but he was by no means full of it
Don't Bump Your Head on that Chandelier
There is a slightly more compact version of a 3 station chandelier available. We have had customers regretting that these ornate light pieces hang down quite so far, and, depending on how low their ceiling is, this can prohibit them from hanging one at all.
The new compact version (left above) only hangs down 43cm (17 inches) from the ceiling and in a room with a 7ft 6inch ceiling that leaves 6ft 1inch of clearance before people start hitting it with their heads.
The difference is in the depth of the sweep of the beaded arms… see the picture of the old version above right and compare
Where Shapps keeps his Schnapps?
British Transport Secretary Grant Shapps was recently pictured above having abandoned his customary two piece suit to get down with the kids in his new 80 degrees of heat summer outfit. But what is he trying to hide between his hands? Could it be a Mary Rose Young design copied onto a rather bland mug? Is that the best way for our leaders to support British endeavour?
Summer Confetti
People try and predict the look of summer…some will say pastels and some bights. Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen told Mary Rose that minimalism is over, while websites a plenty tell us that Loud Bright and Daring is the summer look. Typical of this is the view of Atlanta Stylist Victoria Havlik "Colors like hot pink, bright red, cobalt blue, orange, and yellow are going to pop this summer”. It’s not unusual. But which mug would I actually choose to drink from on a hot August Day?… When the heat's really on I find myself drawn to paler shades and was attracted to one of these confetti mugs Mary Rose made for Tearoom.
The Crown
Mary Rose recently made two more of her Giant Crowns and I realised how unusual a piece it is. It certainly works as a vase, it would hold quite a large fistful of flowers and one imagines that the V shape of the crown “rim” would have an elevating effect on the flowers. As a Candleholder it flourishes too. Finished height is about 9 or 10 inches and it’s another of her slab built achievements. The walls start life as a sheet of clay which has to dry so much that it can still be pliable but not in any way floppy. Then with the eye and dexterity of the expert she turns the slab into tube wrapped around the thick base and starts cutting away triangles to form the crown shape, and teasing the fronds outwards to give as much beauty as possible to the regal form. The finished piece has an elegance that belies slabs and rolling, and it weighs in as one of the heaviest pieces she makes. ..the little coffee cup and saucer are there as a "size guide"
