Hands-On Marine Science

Katie DiGirolomo is one of 22 students from around the world who recently arrived at FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute for the summer. The students are here for a 10-week marine science summer internship, where they work one-on-one with researchers.

DiGirolomo is helping lead the new Keep the Sea Free of Debris junior ambassador program, which educates teens in underserved communities on the impact of marine debris.

Dolphin of the Month: Meet Summer

Summer is an adult female bottlenose dolphin that lives in the Indian River Lagoon. In June 2021, after being tidally stranded in just a few inches of water, she was rescued by the FAU Harbor Branch Marine Mammal Stranding and Population Assessment team.

The team assessed Summer and transported her back into deeper water. Since her rescue, she's been spotted multiple times.

If you see a marine mammal in distress, call 888-404-3922.
Our Photo ID work is permitted under NOAA NMFS LOC #23069 and our stranding response is conducted under a Stranding Agreement with NMFS and FAU Harbor Branch under the authority of the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
