UAC Radio Takes The Crown: How Urban Adult Contemporary Overtook Hip Hop Stations—And Southern Soul Is Leading The Charge

The format, once written off as "old folks' music," is now dominating ratings while mainstream urban struggles.

The increased success of the Urban Adult Contemporary (UAC) radio format, also known as Adult R&B, is supported by a shift in its playlist focus and the growing inclusion of R&B and soul-rooted genres like Southern Soul.

Key factors and data points that support this trend include:

As mainstream Urban Contemporary radio has become primarily a hip-hop format, UAC has assumed a more significant role in showcasing and breaking new R&B records and artists. This focus on R&B provides a natural home for Southern Soul, which is rooted in traditional R&B and soul music.

Growing Audience Demographics: The UAC format is successfully attracting a younger demographic in addition to its traditional 25-54 age group. This expansion of the listener base contributes to the format's increased popularity and success.

Southern Soul Crossover on UAC Playlists: Southern Soul tracks, which often feature soulful vocals, bluesy elements, and danceable grooves, are successfully crossing over onto UAC playlists, as seen in the following examples:

Southern Soul artists are frequently featured in Southern Soul radio mixes alongside artists traditionally associated with R&B, demonstrating genre overlap.

Tracks that are #1 on the Southern Soul charts, such as 803Fresh's "Boots On The Ground," have been noted for "making waves across Hip-Hop, Country, R&B, and Urban AC stations nationwide," explicitly connecting the genre's success to the UAC format [Southern SOUL Radio Mixtape (March 3 - March 7, 2025) - YouTube].

Format Identity and Playlist Breadth: The UAC playlist is defined by its mix of music genres that originated among Black Americans, including R&B, soul, funk, disco, and jazz. This broad definition easily accommodates the sounds of Southern Soul, which is a modern evolution of these foundational genres. UAC stations use slogans like "Classic Soul & Today's R&B" and "The Best Mix of R&B," which align perfectly with the sound and appeal of Southern Soul music.

This data suggests that Southern Soul's distinct, authentic sound is a valuable component of the UAC format's resurgence, helping to provide the R&B-focused content and genre diversity that is appealing to a multi-generational audience.

Is hip-hop dying? | On Point with Meghna Chakrabarti - WBUR

hip-hop-50 image

Earlier this fall, a noticeable absence on the Billboard Top 40 charts sparked a profound question: For the first time since 1990, there were no rap songs in the ranking. Is this merely a temporary blip in commercial popularity, or does it signal that hip-hop is losing its grip on mainstream America?

Recent data from 2024–2025 further complicates the picture, indicating a dip in hip-hop's U.S. market share, which has reportedly fallen from a high of around 30% in 2020 to roughly 24-27%. This retreat from commercial dominance appears to be fueled by a confluence of factors, including a slump in new album releases by major artists and the surging popularity of other genres such as Country and Latin music.

Host Meghna Chakrabarti and her guests pierce this news bubble to explore the cultural and commercial state of one of America's most influential art forms. Join the vital conversation to get answers to the questions that need to be asked: Is the music industry shifting its focus, or is this the beginning of a larger decline for the genre that has defined generations?

Big Sean and Usher Invest $1 Million in New Detroit Youth Production Facility

big-sean-usher-2019-billboard-1800 image

Rapper Big Sean and music icon Usher are teaming up to invest $1 million in a new entertainment production facility for Detroit youth, according to The Detroit News. The project will be housed inside Michigan Central's new Boys & Girls Club, set to open in February.

The Detroit Entertainment Innovation Incubator will feature a virtual production studio, special effects lab, creators' lounge, and additional digital media resources.

The initiative is a partnership between Usher's New Look, Big Sean’s Sean Anderson Foundation, and Emory University's Goizueta Business School.

Big Sean said the goal is to give young Detroiters the tools, access, and mentorship they need to build careers without leaving the city. Since 2018, he has helped install four production studios at local Boys & Girls Clubs.

Usher added that the new space is about helping youth prepare for greatness and opportunity.

New Music From William Bell

Strange Fruit” set the template for what a protest song should be when Lady Day began performing it in 1939, and the song has been remade many times, including by Andra Day for the soundtrack of the film The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

The song’s timelessness and continued relevance is a sad commentary and searing indictment on the racial disparities and injustices that exist in this country 85 years after Billie Holiday first sang “Strange Fruit” at the Café Society in 1939.

And that is what inspired William Bell to make his addition to the protest song canon, “Strange Fruit is Still Hanging.” “Strange Fruit is Still Hanging” is a blues number that begins with Bell making a reference to George Floyd’s murder at the hands of police and comparing it to a lynching.
