FINAL SIGN-OFF: Denver's "Soul to the Rockies” Pioneer James Dr. Daddio' Walker Joins the Ancestors | | |
The airwaves are a little quieter this week as we mourn the passing of a true titan of the dial. James “Dr. Daddio” Walker, the visionary owner and operator of Denver’s legendary AM 1510 KDKO, has passed away, leaving a legacy that fundamentally reshaped the sound of the West.
Inducted into the Blacks in Colorado Hall of Fame in 2008, Dr. Daddio wasn't just a voice on a speaker—he was a bridge builder, a community anchor, and a relentless advocate for Black ownership in an industry that too often kept its doors locked.
From Salesman to Station Owner
Before he was the "Soul to the Rockies," Walker was a social worker in St. Louis and an insurance salesman. He cut his teeth in radio across the South—Shreveport, Atlanta, Jackson, and Houston—before landing in Denver in 1967.
At a time when local stations told him they "just wouldn't hire Blacks," Walker didn't wait for permission; he created an opportunity. In April 1968, he convinced the owner of a country station (KDKO) to take a chance on R&B. By the time the ink was dry, Walker was the announcer, station manager, and sales lead.
Building an Urban Empire
Under his leadership, KDKO became the first urban radio station west of Kansas City. While skeptics doubted R&B could survive in the mountains, Dr. Daddio proved them wrong, capturing the ears of Black and white youth alike.
“Soul is a universal word,” Walker famously said in 1968. “It’s an inner feeling of an individual, and you’ve got to have it to appreciate soul music.”
Nearly 20 years after he first walked through the doors, Walker did what many thought impossible: he bought the station. He moved KDKO to the historic Five Points neighborhood—the "Harlem of the West"—to combat negative media narratives and inject life back into the heart of Denver's Black community.
A Legacy of "Unity in the Community"
Beyond the playlist, Dr. Daddio was a man of action. He founded the first Juneteenth celebration in Montbello and spent decades mentoring Denver’s youth. His family remembers him as a voice that carried the city through "sunshine, rain, and long afternoon drives home."
In a statement, the Walker family shared: "His life was profound, purposeful, and deeply impactful... He leaves behind a legacy of faith, strength, wisdom, and of course, ‘Unity in the Community.’"
The Boogie Report sends its deepest condolences to the Walker family and the city of Denver. We don’t just mourn a broadcaster today; we celebrate a pioneer who showed us that if you believe in what you can do, nothing is impossible.
Rest in Power, Dr. Daddio.

Honoring the Ancestors
Jack L. Cooper
The Undisputed Patriarch of Black Radio
| | |
As we celebrate Black History Month, The Boogie Report looks back at the pioneers who laid the foundation for the airwaves we navigate today. Before the era of FM dominance and digital streaming, there was Jack Leroy Cooper—the man recognized as the first African-American radio disc jockey and the "undisputed patriarch of Black radio."
From Vaudeville to the Airwaves
Born in Memphis in 1888, Jack L. Cooper was a man of many talents long before he touched a microphone. By his teens, he was a successful boxer and semi-pro baseball player. He eventually found his stride in vaudeville, performing as a singer and dancer on the legendary Theater Owners Booking Association (TOBA) circuit.
It was this background in entertainment and journalism—having written for the Chicago Defender—that gave him the vision to see radio not just as a tool for news, but as a stage for Black excellence.
A Historic Debut: The All-Negro Hour
On November 3, 1929, Cooper made history with the premiere of The All-Negro Hour on Chicago's WSBC. While most radio at the time ignored or caricatured Black life, Cooper’s show was a sophisticated mix of live music and comedy. He eventually became a pioneer of the "disc jockey" format, using his own phonograph to broadcast:
A Legacy of "Racial Uplift"
Cooper wasn’t just an entertainer; he was a community pillar. In 1938, he created Search for Missing Persons, a program dedicated to reuniting families who had lost contact during the Great Migration. By 1947, his company, Jack L. Cooper Presentations, controlled 40 hours of programming across four Chicago stations.
Unlike the "personality" DJs who followed, Cooper was known for his "racial uplift" approach. He scrupulously used standard English to project an image of professional excellence, serving as the voice of the urban Black bourgeoisie.
"Cooper and his team became the voice of the urban black bourgeoisie and a symbol of racial uplift." — Voice Over: The Making of Black Radio
Gone But Not Forgotten
Jack L. Cooper retired in 1959 and passed away in 1970, but his influence remains etched into the fabric of Chicago and the radio industry at large. From the National Radio Hall of Fame to Cooper Park in West Pullman, we honor a man who proved that our voices deserve to be heard—loud, clear, and on our own terms.

Radio Royalty Mourns: Chris "Big B" Belcher
Passes Away Surrounded by Family and Industry Icons
| | |
The Boogie Report has confirmed the passing of legendary radio personality Chris Belcher, affectionately known to millions as "Big B" of the iconic Boodah Brothers. Belcher, 57, passed away last Monday following a courageous battle with multiple health conditions.
In his final days, Big B was surrounded by a powerful circle of love. His wife, Wednesday, their children, and grandchildren remained by his side at their regional home. The bedside was also a gathering place for the industry he helped build; former colleagues and entertainment icons—including Shaggy of Z-104, comedian Angus Black, and New York radio pioneer Kool DJ Red Alert—all traveled to bid a final farewell to the "Voice of the 757."
A Titan of the Airwaves
As one half of the Boodah Brothers on 103 Jamz, Big B was a cornerstone of Hampton Roads culture. Alongside his late partner, Kool DJ Law (d. 2010), he defined an era of urban radio with the "Hood Check" and a presence that was as warm as it was authoritative.
He was best known for:
-
The "Big Boodah Hug": A signature gesture of affection for his listeners and community.
-
Community Advocacy: Using his platform to bridge gaps and support local talent across Virginia.
-
Resilience: Even as he faced significant health challenges in late 2025—including dialysis and mobility issues—his spirit remained a beacon for his "Boodah" family.
"He wasn't just a DJ; he was the heartbeat of the community. To see the legends like Red Alert come to pay respects speaks to the magnitude of the man Chris was." — Family Spokesperson
As tributes and condolences continue to pour in from across the country, The Boogie Report will provide updates on planned observances and memorial services as they become available.

Big G Featuring Ms Mickenzie - Baby I Can't Promise You Nothing
| | The Soul of the City: A New Chapter for WRNE | |
For over three decades, the crackle and hum of 980 AM wasn't just radio—it was the heartbeat of Pensacola's African American community. Since December 1990, Robert Hill has led the transformation of a simple frequency into , a station synonymous with the "Soul of the City."
Hill’s legacy is one of grit and grace. By establishing a platform that centered on community engagement and local service, he created a cultural landmark. But as the saying goes, even the most legendary runners eventually pass the baton. In Pensacola, that torch has officially been passed.
A New Era: Radio Plus Streaming
The transition marks a shift from a traditional local broadcast model to a modern, multi-platform powerhouse. Under the new ownership of Radio Plus Streaming, led by COO Miriam Bavly and CCO Peter John, WRNE is bridging the gap between its deep-rooted history and the digital future.
"We are thrilled to curate a deeply meaningful and inspiring experience for our listeners, weaving together the voices and stories that unite our community," says Bavly.
The transformation hasn't just been about business papers and handshakes; it’s been a technical overhaul. Over the last six months, Peter John has spearheaded a technological "sharpening" of the station. By upgrading the signal and broadcast quality, WRNE now delivers a crisp, immersive sound across both Cool 93.7 FM and 980 AM.
The Sound of the Future
While the "Soul of the City" remains, the playlist and programming have expanded to meet a new generation of listeners. The station is charging into Black History Month with a lineup that blends local favorites with global star power:

Looking Forward
One can’t help but notice the shift in the air; the path ahead for WRNE is no longer just a plan, but a visible, vibrant reality. It’s clear that the mission is two-fold: a fierce commitment to protecting Robert Hill’s storied legacy while aggressively pushing the boundaries of what local radio can achieve. Between the upcoming Black History Month features, the new Gospel countdown, and a digital streaming presence that refuses to be ignored, the "Soul of the City" is no longer confined to Pensacola—it is effectively demanding the world’s attention.
Watching this transition, it’s evident that Mr. Hill’s "Job Well Done" served as the necessary spark for this loud, second act. As the signal stretches further and the audio gains a sharp, undeniable clarity, the WRNE Family is making it impossible to look away, standing firm as the unapologetic voice that pulls this community together.
