What’s New
This Sunday night into Monday morning (May 5 to 6, 2024), a concrete pour is scheduled within the City-owned parking lot at 1671 West Avenue (next to the U.S. Post Office) for the construction of the new storm water pump station:
- Site preparations and activity for the concrete pour are scheduled to begin at approximately 9 p.m. Although the contractor will be taking extra measures to mitigate unnecessary noise, additional noise is expected during the ongoing overnight operation.
-
Concrete operations are slated to commence at approximately 10 p.m. on Sunday, May 5th. The ingress and egress of continuous concrete trucks will be ongoing throughout the night and possibly into the work day on Monday morning.
- Trucks are expected to enter the beach from the Julia Tuttle Causeway, travel south on Alton Road and enter the parking lot through West Avenue or Alton Court.
- Lane closures are NOT anticipated during this operation. All trucks waiting to offload will be staged in the private lot adjacent to the City’s parking lot.
In addition to the Sunday night concrete pour, the contractor intends to work this Saturday, May 4 (during the day) to finalize site preparations.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience during this work. The overnight activities are the most efficient way to complete this major concrete pour for the new pump station while minimizing overall impacts to the community.
Project Overview and Benefits
The project’s critical upgrades represent a comprehensive neighborhood improvement program, focused on resolving challenges associated with climate impacts and aging infrastructure. The proposed improvements within the West Avenue neighborhood include replacement of the existing water distribution/transmission systems and gravity sanitary sewers; installation of a robust storm water drainage collection and pumping system, including the raising of the paved roads, sidewalks and harmonization within the adjacent private properties; installation of street and pedestrian lighting; installation of new traffic signals and mast arms; installation of landscaping and irrigation; and construction of a segment of new Baywalk.
What to Expect
The parking lot will remain fenced and closed as work continues. All construction is contained within the parking lot, which is anticipated to last approximately two years. Alton Court will remain open during this construction. Please anticipate additional construction noise and vehicles traveling in the area and follow all posted signs. Please note, this schedule may change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.
Next Steps
The underground and roadway work within the West Avenue neighborhood is being scheduled. A pre-construction public meeting will be conducted prior to the start of neighborhood work.
The project team continues to review opportunities to recover parking spaces throughout the corridor. They are also reviewing the project schedule.
Thank you for your continued cooperation throughout the West Avenue Phase 2 Neighborhood Improvement Project.
