Operation Clean Water: Sewer Rehabilitation

Notice Date: August 7, 2025

What's Happening

In support of Operation Clean Water, the City of Miami Beach has contracted Vortex Companies to conduct lining rehabilitation of the sewer laterals underneath Biscayne Beach Elementary School. The work will be performed within the property limits, with minimal disruption to the neighborhood. The goal of the project is to rehabilitate and repair the sewer laterals, reduce the contamination entering Biscayne Bay and help improve the water quality. Residents can expect to see construction crew and equipment on site and some noise while work is being performed.

Project Overview and Benefits

As part of Operation Clean Water, the University of Miami's Park View Assessment Phase II study identified Biscayne Beach Elementary School as a hot spot for the enterococci bacteria. During their sampling, UM determined the sewer laterals as a source of the contamination to the groundwater and stormwater. The City of Miami Beach has been coordinating with Miami Dade Public Schools to conduct CCTV analysis and rehabilitation work. Rehabilitating the outdated cast iron materials of the sewer laterals with new lining will prevent exfiltration into the groundwater and stormwater systems and will reduce the contaminates entering the bay.

What to Expect

Residents can expect to hear a moderate level of noise while work is being performed. Please expect overnight work as scheduled below. All equipment, trucks and personnel will be contained to the property limits so there should be minimal disruptions. Residents can expect to water quality improvements in the bay.
