A Special Columbus Day Message from the Commission for Social Justice®

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On behalf of the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America® (OSDIA), and its anti-defamation and positive image arm, the Commission for Social Justice® (CSJ), we extend our warmest wishes to you and your families for a joyful and meaningful Columbus Day celebration.

Each October, as we gather across the nation to observe Italian American Heritage Month, we take a dedicated moment to look back, honor our shared roots, and reflect on the extraordinary thread of history that binds us together across generations.

Central to our story stands Christopher Columbus, whose historic 1492 transatlantic voyage sparked a new realm of possibility and fused the fate of Europe with the Americas. Yet for our community, Columbus' legacy extends far beyond his role as a Renaissance explorer.

When our ancestors first arrived on these shores, they faced severe discrimination, economic hardship and social marginalization, Columbus became a vital symbol of pride and belonging. He served as proof that Italians were not strangers to this country, but an indispensable part of its very origin story.

During times of struggle and hardship, our ancestors drew immense strength from Columbus' legacy—something that remains true to this day. He stood as a testament to the value of courage in the face of the unknown, the importance of perseverance against all odds, and the undeniable right of Italian immigrants to hold their heads high in the nation they were helping to build. Through their steadfast work ethic and unwavering devotion to family, those early generations transformed their pride into thriving communities, rich cultural traditions, and lasting contributions to every corner of American life.

Today, Columbus serves as a direct bridge connecting us to the parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents who came before us. As we celebrate Columbus Day each year, we draw up on the very same well of strength and resilience that sustained our ancestors a century ago. Columbus' story reminds us that our place in this country was earned through the sacrifice and determination of those whose blood continues to flow through our veins to this day.

As members of OSDIA, we carry this living legacy forward with deep honor and profound privilege. By coming together in fellowship, serving our communities, and passing these powerful stories down to our children and grandchildren, we ensure that the bond between generations remains as powerfully enduring as Columbus' legacy.

Let us celebrate this Columbus Day with deep respect for our past, pride for our progress, and bright hope for our future.

Fraternally,

Thomas A. Lupo
