Salt and Light in Ordinary Days

In Matthew 5:13–20, Jesus tells His disciples who they already are: “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.” These words follow the Beatitudes and make clear that life shaped by Christ is never private or hidden. Salt preserves and gives flavor. Light reveals and guides. Neither exists for itself; both are given for the sake of others.

This calling lands during a week filled with everyday reminders of shared life. February 4 marks World Cancer Day, a moment when communities pause to acknowledge suffering, perseverance, and hope. Send a Card to a Friend Day (Feb 7) quietly encourages connection and encouragement. And National Pizza Day (Feb 9) celebrates one of the simplest ways people come together around a table.

None of these moments are extraordinary on their own - and that’s the point. Jesus does not call His people to withdraw from ordinary life, but to live faithfully within it. Our good works do not earn God’s favor; Christ has already fulfilled the Law for us. Instead, our lives reflect His mercy so that others may glimpse the goodness of our Father in heaven.

This week, we are reminded that God uses small, faithful presence - steady love, quiet care, honest witness - to season the world and shine His light right where we are.

A Tradition of Connection Among CNH Early Childhood Directors

Early Childhood Directors from across the CNH District have a strong history of gathering for annual retreats centered on faith, leadership, and professional growth. These retreats have featured Bible study and devotions rooted in Scripture, led by local pastors and church workers, alongside high-quality professional learning from experienced presenters. Just as important, these retreats have provided meaningful time for fellowship, shared conversation, and mutual encouragement. Guided by the Early Childhood Advisory Team and gracious host schools, these gatherings have consistently strengthened directors spiritually and professionally while fostering connection across the District.

Get to Know Your Community with the Mission Insite Demographics Tools

The more we understand those who live in our neighborhoods and communities, the more we increase our likelihood of succeeding with our invitation, both personally and collectively as a congregation or school. As we understand who we serve, we can tailor a ministry plan around their needs.

The ACS Technologies Mission Insite tool can help with this and is made available to all CNH District congregations and schools thanks to a partnership with LCEF.
