On His way to Jerusalem, Jesus meets ten people with leprosy and speaks a word that sends them on a healing journey (Luke 17:11–19). Only one of the ten returns to give thanks - the Samaritan. In his response, we see that gratitude is not simply good manners, but the fruit of faith.

In the Small Catechism, Luther reminds us that faith receives God’s gifts and responds with thanksgiving and praise. The healing of the ten lepers shows that God’s mercy in Christ is freely given, yet it is faith that clings to His Word and turns back to glorify Him. As Christ’s redeemed people, we live each day in that same rhythm - receiving His gifts through Word and Sacrament, and returning thanks in worship and in lives of service. Gratitude is not our work but the Spirit’s, drawing us again and again to Christ, who is our true healing and salvation.

This week includes World Mental Health Day on Thursday, October 10.  Many in our congregations and communities are walking unseen roads of anxiety, grief, and weariness. As the Church, we can be the first to notice, the first to pray, and the first to walk with people toward care. Let’s practice “returning to Jesus” by giving thanks, checking in on a friend, and making space for honest conversations. And let’s point people to help when needed—because every healing story matters to God. You are not alone; we walk together. Hope.

Reformation Offering 2025: Walking Together in Mission

As we celebrate the 508th anniversary of the Reformation, we remember the bold faith that sparked a Gospel movement still shaping the Church today. That same Spirit calls us now to proclaim Christ with courage and clarity in our own time.

This year, we’re inviting every CNH congregation to join in a special Reformation Offering. Our simple goal: could your congregation host a door offering or give a one-time gift of $508 in honor of 508 years? Of course, any amount is a blessing—your gift will directly fuel Gospel impact across our District.

Here’s how your offering makes a difference:

30% supports local ministries serving neighbors with Christ’s love.

45% equips leaders through training and wellness care.

25% helps new church workers through educational debt relief.

Together, we can expand Christ’s mission across California, Nevada, and Hawaii. Resources (bulletin inserts, slides, social posts) are available here.

St. John's Napa Celebrates Disability Awareness Sunday

Like many congregations in the CNH District, St. John’s in Napa recognized September 28 as Disability Awareness Sunday. As part of the worship service, two songs were led by the Adults with Disabilities Bible Class along with some members of the church’s Adult Choir. The class members had also enjoyed a baking party on Saturday in preparation to host the fellowship hour on Sunday morning. They took great delight in honoring God by serving the congregation in worship and in fellowship!
